DNR Encourages Other Uses for Invasive Species
Northern snakehead, blue catfish, and flathead catfish are the most harmful invasive fish in Maryland. Blue catfish prey on blue crabs, white perch and other species. They also out-compete native species for habitat space and food. To combat these species, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources urges anglers to kill all invasive species they catch and are discouraged from catch-and-release of these species. DNR recommends eating these species, using them as bait or fertilizer, or even donate frozen fish to zoos to feed wildlife.
Greene Street Theft Arrest
On Monday, April 8th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police responded to a business in the 400 block of Greene St for a shoplifting complaint. Upon arrival, officers contacted an employee of the business who advised a male subject had placed food items in his clothing without paying for them. Officers then made contact with the suspect and confirmed him to be in possession of merchandise for which he did not pay. He was then placed under arrest and transported to Police Headquarters. Myrtle Street Assault Arrest
On Saturday, April 6th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police responded to the 1000 block of Myrtle St for the report of an assault in progress in the street. Upon arrival, officers observed a male subject attempting to leave the area on foot. When stopped, he advised he had only been in a verbal altercation with a female who had already left the scene. A short time later, the female victim was able to contact police by awakening a nearby neighbor for help. Teabow Residential Plan for City Agreement Signed
Teabow Residential’s plan for infill on several city lots was finalized with an agreement signed between the developer and the City of Cumberland. Maryland State Police Graduation Held
The Maryland State Police graduated 33 new troopers at a ceremony in Reisterstown. The 157th Academy class consists of military veterans, former police officers, college graduates and six were Maryland State Police cadets. Nearly 80% of students took advantage of the Associate of Applied Science Degree program, offered through Frederick Community College. Lt. Biden Visits Site of Key Bridge Collapse
President Joe Biden got a birds eye view of wreckage in the Patapsco River from the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Friday. Former Governor Hogan Made Stops in Western Maryland
Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan made stops in Western Maryland on Friday. Hogan, a Republican, is starting his statewide campaign tour for the U.S. Senate. He started the day in Oakland with stops in Grantsville and LaVale before visiting WheelzUp Adventures in downtown Cumberland.
