Warrants Served

On 07/23/2023 the Cumberland City Police Department served four Arrest Warrants on Deron Elbin. The warrants were issued as a result of Elbin failing to comply with conditions set by the court on a previous assault charge by contacting a protected party. Elbin was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center for central booking. Elbin received a hearing before a District Court Commissioner and was held without bond. Arrested – Deron Michael Elbin (48) Cumberland, MD Charges – 2 counts of failure to comply, 2 counts of violation of release conditions    

Centre Street Traffic stop leads to Loaded Handgun arrest

On 07/23/2023 at approximately 4:00 AM an officer from Cumberland City Police observed a vehicle traveling the wrong way on Centre Street. The officer initiated a traffic stop and contacted the operator Carlos Barbosa. A loaded handgun was located in the vehicle and it was learned that Barbosa had a revoked license. Barbosa was placed under arrest and transported to the Allegany County Detention Center for central booking. Replacement Chosen for Vacant School Board Seat in Garrett

Following the resignation of Dr. Matthew Paugh in June, the Board of Garrett County Commissioners have appointed Mr. Cody Brill to serve as a board member of the Garrett County Board of Education.  Brill will complete the unexpired term of office of Dr. Paugh through November 2026.  Brill is employed as an Accountant with Garrett County Government and is finishing his course work for a Master of Arts in Applied Economics from the University of Missouri.  Dr. Paugh resigned his position due to be transferred to another part of the state for his employment.

Radio Caller Wants Tax Bills

Moore Creates New Council on Bay/Waterways

Maryland will be taking a new approach to reducing pollution in the waterways of the state, including the Chesapeake Bay.  Maryland will be the first state to use the latest scientific recommendations designed to improve and clean waterways and provide more places for people to safely swim, protect coastal areas from climate change and increase fish and crab populations.  Moore signed a new executive order creating the Governor’s Council on the Chesapeake and Coastal Bays Watershed that will be charged with accelerating the restoration of state waterways, improve wildlife habitat and bolster shorelines.

June Housing Sales Down

Maryland State Police Investigating Attempted ATM Theft

On July 23, 2023 at approximately 3:56 AM, the Maryland State Police Westminster Barrack received a call for an alarm at the Truist Bank located at 3000 Gamber Road, Finksburg, Maryland 21048. Upon arrival, it was determined that an unknown suspect used a stolen truck, stolen trailer, and skid steer loader, which is also suspected to be stolen, to attempt to steal the ATM. The suspect fled the area prior to our arrival, leaving the truck, trailer, and skid steer behind. Attorney General Supports POS Materials for Gun Buyers

An amicus brief filed by Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown supports Anne Arundel County’s efforts to increase awareness of suicide risk by placing available resources at the point of sale of firearms and ammunition.  The county is currently involved in a lawsuit that is before the US Court of Appeals regarding the location of such materials with plaintiffs saying the pamphlets violate store owners First Amendment rights.  Attorney General Brown says that Education, awareness, and community support play critical roles in recognizing the warning signs of suicide and equipping individuals with support and interventions needed to prevent such tragedies.

Rep. Raskin Pushes for PRESS Act

The House Judiciary Committee unanimously voted to pass Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin’s Protect Reporters from Exploitative State Spying Act.  The PRESS Act would establish a federal statutory privilege to protect journalists from being compelled to reveal sources and prevent federal law enforcement from abusing subpoena power. It ensures reporters cannot be compelled by the government to disclose their confidential sources or research files. The bill shields journalists’ communications records from the government, with narrow exceptions for terrorism and threat of imminent violence. The bill is supported by organizations including the National Association of Broadcasters, and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Valley Road Repair starts Monday

Extensive street repair on Valley Road, 1/2 mile from Henderson Avenue. Weather permitting, work will begin on Monday, July 24, 2023 at 7:00AM. Work is expected to be completed on Friday, July 28, 2023 at 3:00PM. Valley Road, from Independence Street to Forest Avenue, will be closed to all through traffic. Due to the scope of the work, this portion of Valley Road will remain closed during the dates above, or until the work is completed. Citizens accessing portions of Valley Road beyond the work zone are asked to find an alternate route.
