NFL owners unanimously approved the sale of the Washington Commanders on Thursday to a group led by Josh Harris and including Magic Johnson for a record $6.05 billion. 32 team owners voted for the sale, which is the highest price paid for a North American professional sports team. After the finance committee approved the agreement with the new ownership group, Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment Snyder had owned his favorite boyhood team since 1999, when he bought it for $800 million. Stuff the Bus school supply drive to benefit students in Allegany County
County United Way is proud to announce their annual “Stuff the Bus” school supply drive to benefit students in Allegany County will take place on Friday, August 18, from 9 am to 5 pm in the Walmart parking lot in LaVale and also the Staples parking lot in LaVale. Both businesses are helping by allowing a bus to be parked in their parking lot so that volunteers can fill them with school supplies. “This event has been incredibly well supported in the past,” said Michele Walker, County United Way Executive Director. Alex Mooney Trails Jim Justice in West Virginia Senate Poll
Congressman Alex Mooney’s run for the Republican nomination to the U.S. Senate just got more difficult. Mooney said this week he does not believe he will get the endorsement of Donald Trump, according to CNN. Mooney is in a race with Governor Jim Justice for a chance to fill the seat now held by Democrat Joe Manchin. A poll of Republican and Independent voters in West Virginia released by the state Chamber of Commerce earlier this month found Justice favored by 56 percent of those questioned while only 19 percent backed Mooney.
Flying Boxcars Coming to Hagerstown
A community effort to name Hagerstown's new minor league baseball team came to a close Thursday when team officials announced the team will be known as the Flying Boxcars. The name honoring Fairchild Aircraft's production of cargo planes was right up there with the Hagerstown Haymakers in an online voting contest. The Maryland General Assembly funded the team's new stadium at Baltimore Street and Summit Avenue. The Flying Boxcars begin play next year.
Century III Mall Demolition Coming Soon
The Century Three Mall, once a shopping mecca off Route 51 10 miles south of Pittsburgh, is now on its way to demolition. The West Mifflin council voted to condemn the building, the first step to eventual demolition. The three story mall opened in 1979.
Reminder of Valley Road Work Starting July 24

Non-Food Item Giveaway July 27th
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Washington Street will be having its Bountiful Blessings program Thursday, July 27th from 4:00 till 6:00pm. Those in need of items that cannot be purchased using food stamps such as cleaning and personal items are welcome. There is a snack provided while people wait for their turn to receive items. In order to participate, identification including a picture is required. Doors open at 3:30 pm. Bountiful Blessings® is a Christian based charity giving hope through serving families of all faiths by assisting working families and senior citizens during financial hardships by supplementing them with non-food items.
$1.2 Billion For West Virginia Broadband Build-Out
West Virginia state officials are developing a plan for the $1.2 billion allocated by the federal government to expand and improve broadband access to areas lacking in the state. The money is coming from the Telecommunication and Information Administration and Assistant Secretary Alan Davidson said that, “today the internet is a necessity, not a luxury.” The funds must first be used to bring service to areas that are unserved. Centre Street will Remain Closed and Water Service Outage
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Triton Construction, would like to notify the public that N. Centre Street will remain closed between Union Street and Frederick Street through Wednesday, July 26th. This extension is due to unforeseen utility conflicts in the intersection of Centre Street and Baltimore Street. Additionally, a temporary water service outage is planned for customers on North Centre Street between Frederick Street and Baltimore Street on Friday, July 21st. Police Serve Bench Warrant
On July 19, 2023 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant for CDS possession of paraphernalia. Prior to transporting Brown, Officers located suspected CDS on Brown person during a search incident to arrest. Brown was issued a criminal citation for possession not cannabis. Brown was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center and held on a pre set bond of $500.00. Brown was also served with a criminal summons stemming from an assault and theft investigation.
