Lobbyist Says General Assembly Session Sees Milestone

Outages From Fire, Downed Wires

Opposite ends of the county were affected by brief power outages on Wednesday.  A small fire at a substation on Bedford Road occurred around 8:30 in the morning that took out power to over a thousand customers and then a trailer dragged down power lines near the wastewater treatment plant in South Cumberland, breaking off two telephone poles and trapping the driver for a short time. Power was off for a brief time in that area as well.

Chamber Opposes Tax Bill

The Maryland Chamber of Commerce, along with a coalition of businesses, local and regional chambers and associations from across the state, strongly opposes House Bill 1515. This legislation, titled “Sales and Use Tax – Rate Reduction and Services,” is a misguided attempt to fund critical priorities through a massive $2.9 billion tax increase on Maryland residents and businesses. Parks & Recreation Set Easter Egg Hunt

The City of Cumberland Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Constitution Park on Friday, March 29, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The event is open to children ages 12 years and younger and they have the opportunity to get their picture taken with the Easter Bunny. Please bring your own device for pictures. Truck Drags Down Powerlines

Cumberland Fire responded to East Offutt Street in South Cumberland around 11:30am Wednesday for reports of lines down.  Fire command confirmed that live power lines were down along with two telephone poles from a trailer truck driving through the area.  The driver of the truck was still inside. The driver exited the truck once the power lines were off the truck and was checked by EMS on the scene.  Some areas of South Cumberland were without power.

Foster Parents Being Recruited In West Virginia

The West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS), along with Aetna Better Health of West Virginia, Mission West Virginia, and ten foster care agencies have joined in collaboration to launch a statewide campaign focused on recruiting foster parents and addressing the shortage of foster care placements in West Virginia. The campaign’s message targets single and married adults who have considered opening their home for foster care in the past but have not taken action to become qualified. Trout Stocking Reinstated in West Virginia Streams

Gov. Jim Justice announced today that an agreement has been reached between the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to reinstate trout stockings to their original schedule.
