Former Senator Weighs In on Possible Budget Deficit

Governor Wes Moore took office with a large basket of campaign promises to deliver on.  A recent report from the Department of Legislative Services is showing the price-tag on those promises may be much higher than expected.  The report shows that the budget surplus will be taking a heavy hit over the next few years to pay for programs that Moore has supported including the Blueprint for Education, Earned Income Tax Credits, and the Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program.   WCBC checked in with former Senator George Edwards about the situation and he is in agreement with Delegate Jason Buckel…

Manchin Doesn’t Want To Be Spoiler

Power Ball Tickets Selling Well

Buyers are lining up to get their Powerball tickets for the next drawing this week.  The Saturday night drawing had no winner and the $900 million jackpot has grown since then.  Matt Moulden at Allegany Liquors spoke with WCBC and said they have had well over 100 people come in for tickets in the past few days and are expecting more before the next drawing.   Some of those people are new to buying lottery tickets… The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million chances.  The game is played in 45 states across the country as well…

Maryland Leads In Alzheimer Cases

A report released from the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Amsterdam this week shows some worrisome numbers for Marylanders.  Two of the top five counties in the country for Alzheimer diagnosis are in the state. Both Baltimore City and Prince Georges County have over 16% of their populations suffering with the disease. And Maryland ranks overall as the highest of all states for Alzheimer cases at 12.9%. Pirates Sign Top Draft Pick

The Pittsburgh Pirates and right-hander Paul Skenes, the No. 1 pick in Major League Baseball's recent amateur draft, have reached an agreement on a record-setting contract, according to MLB.com's Jim Callis. Skenes will receive a $9.2 million signing bonus, per Callis. That's about half a million under the recommended slot value for the No. 1 selection, but it's still a large enough sum to shatter the previous record of $8.4 million set by Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson back in 2020. 

Camel Out for a Stroll

Last evening, Monday, July 17th near dusk, a camel was sighted walking along Winchester Road. Believed to be owned by a local law enforcement officer, WCBC has confirmed the camel’s name is Clyde.

City Hall Elevator Out of Service Wednesday

PA 529 Program Cuts Fees

While Maryland is struggling to straighten out its college savings plan after incorrect information was released regarding dividends, Pennsylvania is actually cutting some fees for its 529 savings program. State Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced that fees will now range from 0.1925% to 0.2925% annually, depending on the investment chosen. The drop is 0.0125 points.  Garrity said that contributions to a 529 account are tax-deductible and funds are tax-free when withdrawn. Accounts are invested through Vanguard, offering a number of portfolio options including funds targeted to the student’s expected enrollment date. Families can use the funds for tuition and other education…

Garrett School Offices Moving

Dr. Brenda McCartney, Interim Superintendent of Schools for Garrett County, has announced the relocation of the Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) Central Office. The office will be moved to the Dennett Road Educational Complex and the Northern Complex in the middle school. The Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education Departments will move to Northern Middle by the end of August, while the Office of the Superintendent, Finance, Human Resources, and Student Services Departments will move to Dennett Road by the end of November.
