United Way Kicks Off Campaign
The County United Way has kicked off its annual fundraising efforts. This year, the goal for Allegany County is $400,000. Engineering To Start On Allegany Site Plan
EADS Architects of Somerset will be doing the engineering and design of infrastructure for the Old Allegany High School redevelopment project. They will work on areas including grading, sewer and water, landscaping and lighting. EADS previously provided a sample plan for the site and are familiar with the work needed. Paint Tax Passed By House
The nickel and diming of Maryland taxpayers may be starting in Annapolis. House Bill1 – Maryland Paint Stewardship adds an assessment to the purchase of paint that would then be used to cover a paint stewardship program to allow collection and disposal of unused paint. The bill does not stipulate what the assessment will be. The House passed the bill by a vote of 99-37 and now goes to the Senate.
TAVR Procedure Is Less Invasive
UPMC Western Maryland’s Heart and Vascular Institute continues to offer innovative ways of treating cardiac issues with less invasive techniques. Recently, Dr. Hani Alkhatib joined the staff, specializing in TAVR – trans-catheter aortic valve replacement, a procedure that goes through the groin of the patient instead of opening the chest. On Saturday, February 24th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Jordan Marshall Shook, 37, of Cumberland MD. Shook was arrested on an outstanding Arrest Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court for an incident that occurred on February 12th, 2024. On that date, the Cumberland City Police responded to a vacant residence in the 500 block of Frederick St for the report of a burglary. Once on scene, officers contacted the owner of the property who advised the home was currently being renovated and that numerous tools had been left inside. Beginning on Monday, February 26th North Centre Street, between Dexter Place and Frederick Street, North Liberty Street, between Frederick Street and Pershing Street, and Baltimore Street, between Mechanic Street and George Street will be closed to vehicular traffic. Matt Idleman, Deputy Director of Engineering for the City of Cumberland says "as construction progresses downtown, the construction zone is also becoming more congested. Frostburg State Baseball team took a walk-off over Clarion on Saturday afternoon, taking the game with a 6-5 win in the 10th inning.
