South End/Mapleside Trash Pickup Suspended for Tuesday

Due to the closing of the landfill because of extreme weather conditions, City of Cumberland trash collection has been suspended for the Tuesday, South end and Maple side Area of the City of Cumberland. Residents in these areas will receive double trash pickup on their next regularly scheduled collection day: Friday January 12th.  Any questions may be directed to the Public Works Department at 301-759-6620 or publicworks@cumberlandmd.gov or Burgmeier's Hauling at 301-777-0416, Customerservice@burgmeiers.com.

Tree Down On Power Lines – Greene Street

There is a tree down across power lines on Greene Street near the intersection of the Dingle.  Please use caution in the area.  There are no reports yet of power being out.

State of Maryland to Get Employment Overhaul

The State of Maryland will soon be acting on the recommendations of a study hoping to modernize the state personnel hiring system.  Governor Wes Moore had made a promise to hire over 5,000 employees to fill vacancies across state agencies.  A year later, less than 1000 have been hired.  The Maryland General Assembly asked for a task force to review and streamline state hiring practices. Recommendations from the task force include updating job titles, improving applicant engagement through the hiring process, and considering the creation of dedicated staff to take ownership of hiring. Moore Administration Rolls Out “Software Update”

New initiatives dealing with cyber security, digital accessibility, and artificial intelligence were announced by Governor Wes Moore on Monday.  Moore said the State of Maryland is “getting a software update,” and Information Technology Secretary Katie Savage presented coming improvements covering the digital technology space. Casino Revenue Recovers Slightly in December

Maryland Casinos generated $165 million in revenue from slot machines and table games during December of 2023, an increase of less than half of one percent over the same time in 2022. It was the first increase in year over year revenue in months. Gaming tax revenue to the state for December was just over $70 million, a slight increase over December of ’22.  Both Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore and Rocky Gap Casino showed marked decreases from December 2022 revenues – Horseshoe was down 9.6 % and Rocky Gap was off by 8.2%.  Rocky Gap Casino’s total for the calendar…

Critical Blood Shortage

The American Red Cross is facing a critical emergency blood shortage as the nation faces the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years. The number of people donating blood is off by hundreds of thousands since the Covid-19 pandemic. That means hospitals are not getting the supplies needed. Red Cross Executive Physician Dr. Eric Gehrie explains… Blood supply levels are at critically low levels across the country. To find a location to donate, go to redcrossblood.org. Cumberland Officials Will Be Busy At PACE

The City of Cumberland will have a full complement of representation at the upcoming PACE reception in Annapolis next week.  Infrastructure needs top the list this year for the City including needed improvements at the intersection of Harrison and Mechanic Streets.  Mayor Ray Morriss says the annual event is a great opportunity to spotlight the city’s needs in front of legislators…    

Winter Storm Warning until 2PM

Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations ranging from a coating to around an inch or two west of Route 219 with 3 to 6 inches expected along and east of Keysers Ridge to Bittinger. Snow accumulations of 4 to 8 are expected from Grantsville to Finzel into western Allegany County including Savage Mountain. Ice accumulations ranging from a few hundredths in western Garrett to a quarter of an inch near Keyser's Ridge. for Garrett and Extreme Western Allegany Counties until 2PM this afternoon. Furnace Malfunction Cause of Monday Frostburg Fire

A furnace malfunction is being blamed for a house fire on Carlos Road in Frostburg.  Forty firefighters responded to the residence at 1:45pm after it was discovered by a passerby.  Loss to the structure was determined to be $30,000. Two dogs perished in the fire. The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
