A Garrett County resident is starting the New Year off happy after winning over $100,000 in the Maryland Lottery. A woman from Grantsville bought a winning Big Money Doubler ticket on January 3rd at Chestnut Ridge Gas and Liquor. The Big Money Doubler is a progressive jackpot that started at $40,000.The winner claimed the prize in Baltimore at Maryland Lottery headquarters but has not made a decision on how to use her winnings.
CDS and Driving on Suspended license Arrest
On Monday, January 8th, 2024, Officers with the Cumberland City Police observed the driver of a 2007 Dodge not restrained by a seatbelt. Officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and contacted the operator, Daniel Ryan Williams, 40, of Frostburg MD. It was then learned that the driver had a suspended Maryland driver’s license. During the course of the stop, a police K-9 was utilized to conduct a free-air sniff of the vehicle which indicated to the odor of narcotics inside the vehicle. Bench Warrant Served
On Monday, January 8th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Nicholas Lee Craig, 31, of Cumberland MD. Craig was arrested on an active Bench Warrants issued by the Allegany County Circuit Court on January 4th. The warrant alleges Craig failed to comply with the terms of his pre-trial conditions that stemmed from a previous destruction of property charge. At the time of his arrest, Craig was also found to be in possession of an amount of suspected fentanyl. For the possession of the CDS, Craig was issued a criminal citation. Criminal Summons
On Monday, January 8th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police served a Criminal Summons on Corbit Harry Arrowood Jr, 49, of Romney WV. The summons was in reference to an incident that occurred on December 29th, 2023. During that incident, it is alleged that Arrowood had trespassed on posted property belonging to the CSX Corporation. Governor issues State of Preparedness for all 55 counties ahead of high winds, potential flooding
With the potential for severe weather beginning in the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 9, 2024, Gov. Justice has declared a State of Preparedness for all 55 counties in West Virginia. The State of Preparedness will be posted on the Governor’s Website tomorrow morning. The National Weather Service has issued a weather watch, warning, or advisory for all 55 West Virginia counties, which include high wind warnings, winter weather advisories, and flood watches, which have the potential to cause power outages and flooding. Change is in the air for DC football fans. The Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera was fired Monday morning – a move that was anticipated by fans when new owners took over the team. Rivera’s 4-year tenure with the Commanders ended with a 26-40-1 record, including a final season with eight consecutive losses and a home field loss to Division rival the Dallas Cowboys. Controlling owner Josh Harris said to reporters, “clearly we weren’t good enough this year."
Allegany County Schools CLOSED January 9
All Allegany County Public School buildings will be CLOSED tomorrow, Tuesday, January 9, 2024. Asynchronous learning will take place for students, and assignments will be given no later than 9:30 a.m. Teacher office hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. As always, students without access to connectivity will be given up to two days to submit assignments. Additionally, all staff may work remotely tomorrow, Tuesday, January 9, 2024, with the exception of essential personnel.
Time To Clean Out The Medicine Cabinet
Allegany County’s Health Department, along with city, county, and state law enforcement are providing opportunities this month for households to dispose of expired prescription medications. Two Take-Back Days are scheduled for January 16th at PharmaCare Industrial Boulevard and January 18th at PharmaCare Greene Street. Jennifer Hare of PharmaCare says it is good time of year to clean out medicine cabinets… Hare says oftentimes, people are concerned about others seeing what medications they have, but Police collect the bottles and secure them before being destroyed properly…
BBQ Closes Downtown
While twelve new businesses have opened or announced plans to locate in downtown Cumberland, there has been at least one casualty from the construction project on Baltimore Street. Lost Mountain Barbeque has closed its Cumberland location and will operate from its main location in Romney, West Virginia. Once construction started, owners say business decreased to the point it was no longer viable to keep the downtown location open. Lost Mountain will continue to cater for local events, do pop-ups at breweries and have a presence at local festivals.
