Trash Collection Suspended for Today in South End, Mapleside

Due to the closing of the landfill because of extreme weather conditions, City of Cumberland trash collection has been suspended for the Tuesday, South End and Mapleside Area of the City of Cumberland. Residents in these areas will receive double trash pickup on their next regularly scheduled collection day: Friday December 1st.  Any questions may be directed to the Public Works Department at 301-759-6620 or publicworks@cumberlandmd.gov or Burgmeier's Hauling at 301-777-0416, Customerservice@burgmeiers.com.

Lane Closures At Sideling Hill on Wednesday

The Maryland State Highway Administration will be upgrading the traffic barrier and attenuators on eastbound I-68 near the Sideling Hill Visitor Center on Wednesday, weather permitting.  Drivers can expect two right lanes eastbound to be closed with the far right lane open for traffic from 4am Wednesday morning through 8pm. Contractor Carl Belt, Inc will use signs, cones, and barrels to direct drivers through the work zone.  

Listening Session for Public on Wills Mountain Tonight At Museum

A listening session is happening this evening at the Allegany Museum beginning at 7pm to document the historical, cultural, and environmental significance of Wills Mountain State Park. Students from Frostburg State University’s Experiencing Appalachia course have been working on compiling interpretive material for the Wills Mountain State Park as public access moves closer to becoming a reality. The work is supported in part by the Appalachian Collegiate Research Initiative. The session will deal with ways to create a place-based tourism attraction through low-impact recreational opportunities. Trash Collection Delay Today

The City of Cumberland would like to notify residents, due to the sudden closure of Mountainview Landfill this morning there will be a significant delay in trash collection on Tuesday, November 28th. Burgmeier’s is making every effort to complete today’s trash collection routes.  Trash collections are running behind schedule. Please secure your trash for a later than usual collection.

Virginia Ave Theft Arrest

On Monday, November 27th, 2023, an officer with the Cumberland City Police was conducting a routine patrol of a business in the 400 block of Virginia Ave. During the check, they observed a male suspect conducting what was believed to be a theft in progress. The suspect was stopped a short distance from the store and questioned about the suspected theft. It was discovered that the male had numerous unpaid items in his possession. Bench Warrants Served

On Monday, November 27th, 2023, The Cumberland City Police arrested David Allen Mullen, 58, of Cumberland MD. Mullen was arrested on an outstanding Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County Circuit Court. The warrant alleges that Mullen violated the terms and conditions of pre-trial supervision that stemmed from a previous assault charge. Mullen was taken before a District Court Commissioner for his Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond. Connected Devices Grant Brings ChromeBooks

The 2023 Maryland Connected Devices Grant will enable over 140,000 individuals to gain device access to the internet.  The Office of Statewide Broadband and the Department of Housing and Community Development have provided the grant funding for ChromeBooks to be distributed throughout the state for low-income and elderly to have access to critical programs including health, education, and government services.   Allegany County Administrator Jason Bennett said that the grant will help 5,000 residents locally…    

Revolving Loan Fund Could Increase

A micro-revolving loan fund that has just started within the City of Cumberland is seeking to help small businesses out with low-interest loans of up to $10,000.  Some business owners have said the amount really wouldn’t go that far in helping an established small business that needs assistance, though it would be helpful for startups.  Mayor Ray Morriss says the City is already thinking of ways they could add to the loan’s fund, possibly with the county…
