On November 28, 2023, Cumberland Police Department served a Bench Warrant on Richard Alan Wilburn, 46, of Cumberland Maryland. The Bench warrant for failure to appear, was issued by the District Court of Maryland. The original charge was driving a motor vehicle with a suspended out of state license. Safety For Judges Topic of Meeting
The shooting death of Maryland Circuit Court Judge Andrew Wilkinson in Hagerstown just weeks ago has opened a case for more protections of judges, especially those dealing with custody issues or domestic violence. Maryland Supreme Court Judge Matthew Fader held a virtual meeting Tuesday with judges, magistrates, and other court employees across the state to discuss ways to protect judges and other court personnel who could be subject to violent acts in or out of the courthouse. Closing of Pedestrian Bridge Requested
Issues of vagrancy continue to plague the George Washington Headquarters and Canal Place areas. At the November meeting of the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority, a letter from Nicky Shields, Business Director for the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad requested that access to the Wills Creek pedestrian bridge be blocked during the run times for the Polar Express by installing orange barrier fencing. WVU Benefits From Nemacolin Resort
Future students in the hospitality and tourism management industries will benefit from a large donation given to West Virginia University by Nemacolin Resort. At their annual holiday Light Up Nemacolin celebration, CEO Maggie Hardy of Nemacolin presented WVU with a check for $7 million dollars to supplement the Hardy Family Hospitality and Tourism Endowment that funds scholarships and residency internships. The money will also create two new professorships in the WVU John Chambers College of Business and Economics.
Elections Board To Have Safety Training
During the November 2023 election ballot counting process, suspicious letters were sent to election offices across the country, with at least one letter containing fentanyl. This has brought to the forefront again the safety of mail handling that was highlighted in 2001 with Anthrax attacks. Locally, the Allegany County Board of Elections has not had any incidents with mail tampering but Elections Administrator Diane Loibel says that the staff will be undergoing training… Loibel tells WCBC that polling place safety is also top of mind, come election day…
More Access To Contraceptive Care
Governor Moore announced Tuesday a new partnership to provide Marylanders with more access to contraceptive care. Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Arrest Report
Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police have combined resources to target open and active warrants. As a result, the following individuals have been apprehended. Monday, November 27, 2023 Darien Demon Manning, 22 of Cumberland, was arrested on a Circuit Court Bench Warrant for Failure To Appear for a Violation of Probation hearing. His original conviction was for: CDS: Possession With Intent to Distribute: Narcotics. He was previously released on a $15,000 Unsecured Personal Bond. An Unsecured Personal Bond (UPB) is a signed document that says a specified amount of money will be paid if the defendant breaks bond conditions….
St. Maria Goretti Finalizes Closure Decision
In a letter to the school community, Dr. Amy Summers, principal of St. Maria Goretti, confirmed that this will be the final academic year for the Hagerstown Catholic High School. An Independent Exploratory Committee had been formed after the Archdiocese of Baltimore announced earlier this year that it could no longer fund the school. Dr. Summers noted that the committee found that Goretti cannot sustain itself as an independent Catholic school. The committee concluded that operational costs could not be met for next year.
