Bomb Threat Evacuates WVU Building

West Virginia University reported a bomb threat on Tuesday at the Mineral Resources Building on the Evansdale Campus.  An employee received the threat via phone just after 12:30 yesterday and the building was evacuated.  Messages from the WVU Alert system told students to avoid the Evansdale Campus while a sweep was conducted. The all-clear was given just before 3pm.  

City Establishing Revolving Loan Fund

A Micro-Revolving Loan Fund, designed for new small businesses along with a Business Disruption Fund is being planned by the City of Cumberland.  Money loaned can be used for specific business purposes and will also be available to businesses that have had disruptions due to the Baltimore Street Project. Jeff Silka, City Administrator, described the program during the Mayor and Council work session, saying the loan rate will be about 3%.

Operation Safe Stop Promotes Bus Safety

The Shapiro Administration released the results of Operation Safe Stop, an annual school bus enforcement initiative across Pennsylvania. Held annually, Operation Safe Stop is a one-day targeted enforcement event where law enforcement and participating school districts document drivers violating the state's School Bus Stopping Law in order to bring attention to the importance of watching for school buses and students. Over 175 violations were observed in one day.

Elias Executive of the Year

Baltimore Orioles General Manager and Executive Vice President Mike Elias has been voted Executive of the Year by Major League Baseball.  Elias directed the growth of a home-grown Orioles team, bringing players up through the Orioles farm system. Full of young talent, the 2023 Orioles finished with a 101-61 record and a playoff appearance.  Elias took the management helm in 2018.

Hunger Solutions Says Hunger is Prevalent

Six dollars a day per person…  If you are receiving SNAP Benefits in Maryland, that’s the amount you have to spend on food. A recent Maryland Hunger Solutions report shows that Allegany County averages over 15,000 residents using SNAP benefits monthly – almost 25% of the population. In March, the pandemic levels of SNAP benefits ended, cutting the amount families received on a monthly basis. 

Treasurer Warns of Scammers in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania State Treasurer Stacy Garrity is warning that scammers are calling residents who have applied for a Property Tax Rebate and asking for bank account information in an effort to steal personal information. The caller claims to be from the Treasury and asks for a bank account number — supposedly so Property Tax Rebate payments can be made by direct deposit. The Property Tax Rebate Program benefits Pennsylvanians age 65 and older, widows and widowers age 50 and older, and people with disabilities age 18 and older. The maximum standard rebate this year is $650.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT & ATTEMPTED THEFT ARREST

On Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at approximately 8:24 PM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department was traveling out of UPMC parking lot when he observed Chad Izat running in the roundabout on Willowbrook Rd.  Izat then ran into the roadway and in front of the officer’s vehicle.  The officer stopped and contacted Izat.  Izat began yelling and running around the officer’s vehicle.  Izat’s actions caused traffic to redirect.  Izat was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters.  He was issued a criminal citation and released.  Upon his release and in front of officers, Izat ran to the driver’s…

BENCH WARRANT/CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Tuesday, November 7, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Ashley Tilson.  The warrant was issued as the result of Tilson violating probation.  He was originally charged with Theft: $100 to under $1500.  Tilson was arrested and later seen by a District Court Commissioner for a bond hearing.  Tilson posted a $500 bond. Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Report

The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police – Barrack C have combined resources to target open and active warrants. As a result, the following individuals have been apprehended. Friday, November 3, 2023, Fymir Lashawn Alexander, 24 of Philadelphia, PA was extradited and served two Circuit Court warrants for Failure to Appear and Violation of Pretrial Release. His original charge was Handgun in Vehicle. His was released on a $25,000 corporate bond. He then appeared before a Judge on 11/6/23 where he entered a plea agreement, and was subsequently sentenced to 2 years with all but 7 days suspended…
