Fort Hill High School placed on HOLD for a Period of Time Friday

Today, September 29, 2023, Fort Hill High School was placed in a HOLD status of the Standard Response Protocol due to a medical emergency. A HOLD status is used when the hallway needs to be kept clear of occupants. As of approximately 11:30am, the Cumberland Police gave the “All Clear” for the HOLD status and the instructional day has resumed as normal.  

Archdiocese of Baltimore Files Bankruptcy

According to WBAL-TV-11  from Baltimore, the Archdiocese of Baltimore of the Catholic Church, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Friday, September 29, 2023  The Archdiocese filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as it faces a potential for child sexual abuse lawsuits. This action comes days before a new Maryland law takes effect that eliminates the statute of limitations for victims of sexual abuse to file lawsuits. It also raises a cap on noneconomic damages to $1.5 million per incident, and it does not cap economic or punitive damages.

Movies Planned at Festival Grounds Tonight, Saturday

Canal Place Festival Grounds plans tonight and tomorrow for an evening of movie fun! Bring a blanket or chair to sit on to enjoy a wonderful evening with friends and family.  Friday night we’ll be showing “DC League of Superpets” with a runtime of 100 minutes. Saturday will be the movie “Sing 2” with a runtime of 110 minutes. Both movies are rated PG. Movies start at dusk (about 7:30pm each night)

DNR Announces Fall Stocking

Fall trout stocking will begin in early October, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.  Crews will transport thousands of state hatchery-raised brown, golden and rainbow trout to select creeks, rivers, lakes, and ponds across the state.  Anglers can call the trout stocking hotline on Fridays for a weekly update on all locations stocked. The DNR publishes daily updates on its webpage and social media outlets.

PA Threat Assessment Teams Get Funding

A Pennsylvania program that has already trained about 7,500 educators and administrators on assessing potential threats will receive an additional $360,000 to continue making schools safer. The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency approved the funding. Each school in the state is required to have at least one Threat Assessment Team that works to manage students whose behavior may indicate a threat to the safety of the student, other students, school employees, facilities, the community or others.

UPMC Western Maryland Redesignated a Level III Trauma Center

UPMC Western Maryland was recently redesignated as a Level III trauma center by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems for the commitment to provide medical professionals and facilities to best treat trauma patients, and to reduce the morbidity and mortality of the residents and visitors in Maryland. A Level III designation requires a resuscitation unit, operating room and intensive care unit available at all times, as well as an on-call trauma surgeon, neurosurgeon and orthopedic surgeon available at the facility within 30 minutes of the trauma call, along with an on-call anesthesiologist with a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA)…

Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Warrants & Arrests

Randy Scott Jobson, 44 of Springfield, WV, was extradited from the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail in August, WV and was served three District Court bench warrants – 2 Failure to Appear, 1 Violation of Probation. Original Charges include: CDS: Possession – Paraphernalia, Driving without a license and numerous other traffic offenses. He is being held at the Allegany County Detention Center on a $1,000 bond for each case. Todd Richard Leatherman, 41 of Keyser, WV, also extradited from the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail in Augusta, WV was served a Circuit Court Bench Warrant for Violation of Pre-Trial Release. Arrest Warrants Served

On September 28th, 2023 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on Anthony Horn Jr. The Arrest Warrant was issued by the District Court when Horn violated the conditions of his probation. Horn was taken before a District Court Commissioner where he was held on a $500 bond. Arrest: Anthony Edward Horn Jr, age 25, Cumberland Maryland. Charge: Violation of Probation.

McKay Says EVs Shouldn’t Be Mandated

Senator Mike McKay is speaking out on the mandate that Governor Moore has declared on phasing out the sale of gas-powered vehicles in the state by 2035.  McKay, in a letter to constituents, says the government has no right to mandate the types of vehicles people can buy in the state or country.   He says the cost of buying and maintaining an electric vehicle is beyond the reach of most Marylanders…  

Waste Transfer Zoning App Rescinded

Burgmeier Hauling has decided to withdraw its application for the construction of a waste transfer center at the intersection of Bedford Road and Route 220.  An overflow crowd at Bedford Road Fire Hall Wednesday evening met with Burgmeier representatives to present their opposition to the location of the center, saying it was poorly located – sitting in the midst of a residential area and backing directly on to Sunset Memorial Park.  Thursday morning, Burgmeier Hauling rescinded their application with Allegany County for the zoning approval.  One resident vocal in the opposition to the location, Richard Mihailovich, said that citizens from…
