A structure fire early Wednesday morning claimed a life in South Berkeley County. A representative of the Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Department tells MetroNews they were alerted just after 1 a.m. to a structure fire with entrapment in the 3100 block of Winchester Avenue south of Martinsburg. “When they arrived, they encountered fire at the front of the house. A crew located one victim just inside the front door. The victim was deceased,” the spokesperson said. Fire crews continued to search for a second victim. That person was located outside and was treated and transported to a local hospital.
