On Wednesday evening at 8:07 PM, the Cumberland Fire Department Ambulance responded to a private residence in the 100 block of South Street for a 1 year old child that had been found unresponsive in the bathtub. The Cumberland Police also responded.

When EMS personnel arrived they found the father of the child attempting emergency CPR on the child. EMS personnel took over emergency care while transporting the child to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Based on the circumstances, Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation (C3I) also responded.

Investigators learned that the father had placed the child and a 2 year old sibling in the bathtub while getting ready to prepare dinner and while performing other household chores. After a short period of time, the father heard the 2 year old calling for him. When the father entered the bathroom he discovered the 1 year old victim face down in the tub. The father removed the child from the water and attempted CPR while calling for assistance. EMS personnel arrived shortly afterwards.

The child has since been transferred to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV for further treatment, and is currently in critical condition.

The investigation is continuing.
