City Police Make Robbery Arrest on Virginia Avenue

On Tuesday, November 24th, 2020 at 7:50 pm, officers from the Cumberland Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of Virginia Avenue for a robbery. While enroute, officers were informed that a witness to the incident was pursuing the suspect on foot. Officers located the witness in the 900 block of Maryland Avenue who pointed out the suspect identified as Bruce Ruth III, age 20, of Cumberland, Maryland.  Officers advised Ruth to stop, but Ruth refused to follow officer’s instructions, and refused to stop. Officers pursuing Ruth advised him he was under arrest, but Ruth resisted officers attempting to apprehend him. Ruth was ultimately taken into custody without further incident. 

Officers learned through their investigation that Ruth had approached the victim in a parking lot in the 200 block of Virginia Avenue.  Ruth then ran up behind the victim, pulled them to the ground, and forcefully took the victims purse before fleeing the area. 

Ruth was arrested and charged with robbery, assault 2nd degree, theft $100-$1500, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstructing and hindering.  He was later taken to District Court for his Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond.
