October 24th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

Allegany County School Superintendent David Cox was part of a major vote of confidence and support expressed this week for the Chinese Immersion program.  The educational course is available at West Side Elementary School and Braddock Middle School, has approximately 120 students, and includes seven Chinese instructors teaching Chinese Mandarin language with math, science and culture. It has become  a point of controversy in recent weeks as school board candidates David Bohn, Robert Farrell and Wayne Foote, a current board member, have raised questions about the program, with a particular concern about the role of the Confucius Institute and political propaganda.  An overview of the program was presented during Tuesday’s meeting of the board, with data presented showing that those students participating are outperforming  the county and state averages. A number of parents attending the meeting voiced ringing endorsements…

Board President Sara-Beth Bittinger said she hopes the data as well as the testimony of parents, teachers and students will put an end to any questions surrounding the program…
