Fatal House Fire On W. Industrial Blvd

Deputy State Fire Marshals are currently on the scene conducting an origin and cause investigation of a late afternoon fire that occurred at a two story single family wood framed dwelling located at 614 W. Industrial Blvd in Cumberland.  The owner of the property is Laura Parkinson.

                The 911 call was received at approximately 3:30 p.m. from a passerby and neighbor who discovered the fire.  Firefighters from mutual aid companies and West Virginia assisted Cumberland Fire Department with the one alarm fire.   It took approximately 30 fire personnel approximately 10 minutes to control the fire.   A female occupant was rescued from the fire.  Laurence Parkinson, 85, was an occupant who was trapped in the house fire.  He was transported to Western Maryland Regional Hospital Center where he succumbed to his injuries.   Personnel from Cumberland Fire, Cumberland Police Department and Maryland State Police assisted with the rescue.  The investigation revealed that no working smoke alarms were located in the residence.

                  The fire has been extinguished.  The origin and cause of the fire is currently under investigation.  Total damages are estimated at approximately $70,000.

              The victim will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.  

              The Cumberland Fire Marshal's Office and C3I are assisting the Office of the State Fire Marshal with the investigation.
