Hogan Appoints Judge Laura Ripken, Wife of Orioles Legend, to Appellate Court

January 6th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

Gov. Larry Hogan on Wednesday appointed Judge Laura Ripken, the wife of Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr., to the Court of Special Appeals. Ripken was one of a number of nominees submitted by the Appellate Courts Judicial Nominating Commission. “The appointment of qualified individuals to serve across our state’s justice system is paramount to upholding our responsibilities to the people of Maryland and the rule of law,” Hogan said in a statement. “I have confidence that Laura Ripken will continue to be a strong advocate for the law and will serve the citizens of the state of Maryland admirably.”

Ripken is the administrative judge for Anne Arundel County Circuit Court. She has been the judge overseeing the case of Jarrod Ramos, the man who killed five people in the Capital Gazette newsroom in 2018. The second phase of Ramos' trial, which would determine whether he can be held criminally responsible, has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. It is not immediately clear how Ripken's promotion will impact proceedings.

Prior to her appointment to the bench in 2010, Ripken served 19 years as a county prosecutor. She clerked for Anne Arundel County Circuit Judge Bruce C. Williams from 1989 to 1998. She studied at Lehigh University and The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law.

She and Cal Ripken married in 2018.
