Police respond to domestic assault

On Friday, at approximately 2:43 p.m., the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence located in the 100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in reference to a domestic assault.  Upon the officer’s arrival James William Hendershot, age 22, Cumberland, MD and Kelsey Dawn Jenkins, age 20, Cumberland, MD were contacted and separated.  Officers observed minor injuries to both Hendershot and Jenkins. 

 

Jenkins advised officers that she and Hendershot have been arguing over civil issues all day and it just turned physical.  Jenkins stated that Hendershot struck her in her face with his fist and began to choke her.  Jenkins was able to get away from Hendershot and run to a neighbor’s residence to have the police called.

 

Hendershot advised that he and Jenkins were arguing and then it turned physical.  Hendershot stated that Jenkins began to assault him by scratching and hitting him with her fists.  Hendershot stated that he then grabbed Jenkins in a hugging motion in an attempt to restrain her to keep her from assaulting him further.  Hendershot stated that Jenkins slipped his grasp by biting him.  Hendershot stated that Jenkins then assaulted him further by striking him with her fists. 

 

Both subjects were placed under arrest for assaulting each other.  Neither subject’s required medical treatment.  Both were charged with one count each of second degree assault.  Hendershot and Jenkins were both taken to District Court for their individual initial appearances’.  Hendershot and Jenkins were both released on their personal recognizance by a District Court Commissioner.
