School Cancellations A Tough Call For School Superintendents

The national weather service was calling for a winter storm Tuesday for most of Maryland including a forecast of 3 to 5 inches of snow in Allegany County to begin in the morning through the early afternoon. However by the time 3 o’clock rolled around- or dismissal time for schools- not a flake had hit the ground. Calling off school for the day, which is what occurred early yesterday in Allegany and other counties in the region, is never an easy call for a superintendent. Having to do it prior to any snow or sleet actually materializing and relying on a forecast is even more difficult. Allegany County Superintendent Dr David Cox, based on the forecast, made the call to close schools early Tuesday morning….
