Sheriff’s Department Makes Arrest

On May 14, 2014 at approximately 2:00 A.M. Cumberland Police attempted to stop a vehicle on Mechanic Street and the driver refused to stop. A short pursuit occurred and the pursuit was eventually called off after the vehicle traveled outside the Cumberland city limits. A short time later an Allegany County Sheriff’s deputy located the vehicle in the Corriganville area and attempted to stop it and the driver refused to stop. A pursuit began and traveled on Mt. Savage Road (Rt.36) towards Mt. Savage. As the pursuit continued into the Mt. Savage area the driver of the vehicle traveled onto Mile Lane at a reduced speed. The suspect vehicle eventually struck the deputy’s vehicle while turning around and traveled back towards the Mt. Savage area. The pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed into the deputy’s vehicle a second time before coming to rest in a ditch on Beartrack Farm Road. The driver of the vehicle, Michael Ray Reckart, was taken into custody without further incident. It was later learned the vehicle had been stolen from the Mineral County, West Virginia area earlier in the night and Mr. Reckart was operating the vehicle on a revoked driver’s license.

During a search of Mr. Reckart’s person, controlled dangerous substances were located along with drug paraphernalia. There were also stolen items located inside the vehicle. Mr. Reckart was charged with the following crimes in reference to this incident.

CDS: Possession of Marijuana
CDS: Possession of Paraphernalia (2 counts)
Assault: Second degree
Malicious Destruction of Property (2 counts)
20 traffic offenses to include fleeing and eluding police
