Shift in Pension Cost May Reduce Positions

March 6th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

Although nothing is known for certain at this point- even if Governor Martin O’Malley’s plan to shift fifty percent of the costs of teachers pensions to local governments- Allegany County’s Board of Education may be held harmless at least in year one as a result of a disparity grant. Another rally against the “shift” of local officials, teachers, union representatives and concerned citizens was held in Annapolis on Monday. Allegany County School Superintendent David Cox said that state cuts alone- even without the pension shift being factored in- has forced the school system to reduce some 90 positions in the past four years, and that trend could continue for the next fiscal year.
