Shrine Officially Saved. Two Other Catholic Churches Closing

November 24th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

The Catholic Review is reporting that Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church, which serves a large portion of Allegany County, has been approved to close and sell two of its chruch buildings, but will continue to operate the Shrine of Saints Peter & Paul, in Cumberland.

Several months ago, a committee recommended that the Shrine, St. Ambrose, Cresaptown, and St. Patrick, Mount Savage, be closed to help deal with financial difficulties.  According to the article, St. Ambrose will close and the building and property will be sold.  St. Patrick, Mount Savage, will be leased to a group dedicated to caring for the historic church property.  It will be permitted to have Mass on St. Patrick Day and on the anniversary of the church, on October 5th.  It will not be allowed to host funerals or baptisms, but may be used for weddings.

There was a big push to keep the Shrine open, and some had hopes that Sunday Mass may return, but that will not be the case.  Still, Friends of the Shrine will be a part of the ongoing support structure.
