Supreme Court Rules On Same-Sex Marriage

In a landmark opinion, the Supreme Court ruled Friday that states cannot ban same-sex marriage, handing gay rights advocates their biggest victory yet. The 5-4 ruling had Justice Anthony Kennedy writing for the majority, with the four liberal justices. Each of the four conservative justices wrote their own dissent.  At least 36 states, including Maryland, plus the District of Columbia currently recognize gay marriage in some form. The other states, meanwhile, passed state laws banning same-sex marriage. When Maryland officially began recognizing same sex marriage 2 and a half years ago, it led to a large number of out of state same sex couples coming to Allegany County for licenses.
