Franklin Street Crossing Closed June 12 & 13
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of CSX, would like to notify the public that the Franklin Street Crossing will be closed to thru traffic between North Centre Street and Columbia Avenue on Monday, June 12th, to Tuesday, June 13th, in order for paving of the crossing to occur. Signage will be in place to detour passenger vehicles around the road closure. Traffic is expected to be restored on Tuesday afternoon, June 13th. Friends Aware Summer Sizzle this Friday
Friends Aware Summer Sizzle June 16th from 4 till 9 at the Allegany County Fairgrounds. Friends Aware, Inc., a Cumberland-based nonprofit organization serving adults with developmental disabilities, presents the Summer Sizzle. The event features music by Appalachian Road Show, a bluegrass-style band that has appeared at the Grand Ole Opry. There will be food vendors, a beer truck, and gaming. Gov. Justice announces West Virginia Child Advocacy Center Grant funds worth $2.1 million for over 20 projects
Gov. Jim Justice announced today that he has awarded $2,118,686 million in West Virginia Child Advocacy Center (CAC) Grant program funds to 22 projects. These funds are given to local non-profit CACs throughout the state to address the growing problem of child abuse and neglect. These awards are focused on a multi-disciplinary response to the investigation, treatment, and prosecution of child abuse cases by providing such services as advocacy, education, forensic interviews, evaluations, and referrals. On Saturday, June 10, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Jacob Baker. The warrant was issued as the result of Baker violating probation. Baker was originally charged with a DUI offense. He was arrested and transported to Central Booking. Arrest for Impersonating a Firefighter
Deputy State Fire Marshals arrested a West Virginia man after he impersonated a firefighter and attempted to use a two-way radio to cancel responding fire and EMS units called to a Pekin house for a medical emergency. Matthew W. Milburn, 32, of Romney, who is not affiliated with a fire or EMS department, was charged with impersonating a firefighter and impeding emergency transmissions after a 911 call was made earlier this week. Ocean City Approves Digital Boardwalk Signs
OCEAN CITY – Resort officials this week agreed to install 28 new digital message signs on the Boardwalk, but not before a lengthy discussion on visual clutter. On Monday, the Mayor and Council had before them a request from town’s tourism department to purchase and install 14 double-sided, or 28, variable message signs (VMS) along the Boardwalk. Tourism and Business Development Director Tom Perlozzo said the total cost of $549,815 would be paid for with dedicated advertising funds.

ALLEGANY COUNTY, MD (June 9, 2023) – A Cumberland man faces three separate malicious destruction of property charges after a trash fire he set caused nearly $5,000 in damages to nearby property in April. Samad Jabri Waller, 36, was charged after a joint investigation between Office of the State Fire Marshal, Cumberland Police Department, and the Cumberland Fire Marshals Office identified Waller as the person who started the fire. The summons was issued in connection with an incident that occurred on June 8, 2023. On this date, at approximately 5:06 PM, an alleged victim reported to an officer that he was assaulted by a male subject inside of a business in the 200 block of Greene Street.
