Missing Person Reported

Kenneth Pierce Jr (age 35) has been reported missing to the Cumberland Police Department.  His most recent residence was in Alabama but was last seen in the Cumberland area in approximately late June. He has previously resided in the Cresaptown area.  He is described as a white male, approximately 5-7. 185 lbs with blonde hair.  Anyone with information as to his whereabouts is urged to contact the Cumberland Police Department at 301-777-1600.  Photo is attached.  

Increased Patrols Result in Multiple Citations

On Monday, September 15th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served multiple Civil Citations as a result of ongoing increased patrols in the downtown mall and surrounding area. Poverty Report Highlights Senior Woes

There’s good news and bad news to report about poverty in America. ABC’s Jim Ryan says more people managed to rise above the poverty line in the latest government estimate, but senior citizens are facing issues…     “The glaring exception in the Census Bureau’s Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage Report is the fastest growing population – those over 65. Based on pretax cash income, the percentage of seniors in poverty rose to 9.9% last year from 9.7% in 2023. Every other age group either saw gains made against poverty or remained steady.”

Candy Prices Increasing

Calming that sweet tooth will cost a little bit more in the coming days. Sheetz Convenience Stores is increasing prices on select Hershey products, citing costs from the manufacturer. Hershey implemented a 26% cost increase on candy bars incuding Reese’s, Hershey’s, Kit-Kat, and PayDay. The increase only applies to Hershey-branded items; all other products at Sheetz remain unaffected according to Sheetz Public Affairs Manager Nick Ruffner. The increase takes effect Wednesday.

Local Vigil Held For Charlie Kirk

Over 200 people attended a vigil this past Saturday evening at City Hall Plaza in Cumberland in memory of political activist Charlie Kirk. Former Area Businessman Passes Away

Richard Springer, 94, passed away September 6 in Florida. Springer was a 1949 graduate of Fort Hill High School and founded General Graphics in 1965. He was a Master Photographer who opened a studio in Florida following his retirement and had many photos published in magazines, journals, and reports.  Interment will be private and celebration of life will take place. Scarpelli Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Patterson Ave. Assault and Attempted Burglar Arrest

On Monday, September 15th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Amber Nichole Jefferson, 34, of Ridgeley WV. Jefferson was arrested on an active Arrest Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court for an incident that occurred on July 22nd, 2025. The warrant alleges Jefferson assaulted a male subject on that date and attempted to burglarize a residence in the 800 block of Patterson Ave. Jefferson was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance, where she was released on his own recognizance. ARRESTED -  Amber Nichole Jefferson   34yo. CHARGES -  Assault 2nd Degree, Attempted Burglary 4th Degree.

MCAP Testing Shows Improvement in County

Maryland’s Comprehensive Assessment Program found improvement in Allegany County schools this past year. The county surpassed state levels in 15 of 21 testing areas. The county has also seen a 4% increase in graduation rates. Morrisey Claims Win With NCAA Selection Process

Governor Patrick Morrisey is pleased about rule changes coming to the March Madness basketball tournament selection process.  His office along with the West Virginia Attorney General had claimed the 2025 March Madness selection process was flawed, eliminating WVU from participating. Governor Morrisey says the new rules will level the playing field… “That as a result of the investigation and the work by our attorney general and our office, the NCAA is changing its conflict of interest policy to make sure what happened in the past that led to the WVU snub will never happen again.”
