CDS ARREST

On April 19th, 2025 at approximately 7:18 p.m., officers from the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue, for an unruly patron. Upon arrival they were directed to a subject identified as Jason Apollo Crabtree. Officers contacted Crabtree and in plain view observed a baggie of suspected CDS exposed from his pocket. When asked about the substance, Crabtree confirmed being in possession of a controlled dangerous substance. The substance was confiscated, and Crabtree was issued a criminal citation. High School student tragically passes in vehicle accident

Southern Garrett High School issued a statement that one of their students has tragically lost their life in a motor vehicle accident Friday. Trenton Switzer, 16 years of age was pronounced deceased at the scene. The school administration has decided to postpone the PBIS incentive activities originally scheduled for Monday to honor the student. Counselors will be available for students and staff Monday to assist processing his loss. School administration has required that everybody keep the family and friends of Switzer in your thoughts and prayers at this time. 

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision on Hutton Road

On April 18, 2025, at approximately 2:25 P.M. Garrett County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area of Hutton Road near the intersection of Dilly Road, for a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, deputies located two vehicles, a Honda Civic and Ford F150 which both collided, head on. As a result of the collision, Corina Sue Hymes, 55 years old of Terra Alta, West Virginia, and a 16-year-old juvenile male were pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is ongoing. Smallwood Street house fire

Cumberland Fire Department and Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of South Smallwood Street at Greene Street to assist with a working house fire Saturday at approximately 15:37 hours. Additional surrounding Fire Departments called to assist due to the severity of the incident. No report of any serious injuries. The State and Cumberland Fire Marshal's investigating the cause of the fire.

Stolen ATV

The Garrett County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information regarding a stolen ATV. The ATV, a 2019 Kawasaki Brute Force 750, was stolen near the intersection of Althouse Hill Road and Corona Bayard Road, between the hours of 1:00 am and 9:00 am on April 19, 2025. Anyone with information regarding the theft is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 301-334-1911.

Hilltoppers Defeat Softball in Season Home Finale

Frostburg State softball team dropped its final two home games of the year. West Liberty won in a first game comeback 8-5 and 10-1 in the second.   Freshman Izabella Donaldson got the start for the Bobcats, striking out the first batter she saw before hitting two straight batters. Sunrise Service 6:30 a.m. At Constitution Park Sunday

Bethany House of the Lord will be hosing an Easter Sunrise Service early Sunday morning at the Constitution Park Amphitheatre. Bethany House Pastor Michael Mudge tells WCBC the service will have music and special speakers… "We're encouraging people who want to come to bring their own lawn chair and of course dress appropriately, bring blankets, whatever. We'll have hot drinks available. It'll be maybe about a 45-minute service starting at 6:30 in the morning."

ACPS Coordinator Honored

An employee of the Allegany County Public School System has received statewide recognition. At a Community Schools Conference in Towson, Autumn Symons was named the Western Maryland Champion of Community Schools. Symons recognized for work with field trips, robotics, literacy, cooking, fitness, and art.  She also works with the Maryland Extension Service on a community garden for food and education.

Firefighters have responded to the area of Greene and Smallwood Streets for a fire this afternoon.  Drivers should avoid the Greene Street area.
