Mountain Ridge and Beall Elementary in lock in status
Mountain Ridge High School and Beall Elementary School are currently in lock-in status as a precautionary measure as there were reports of a disturbance originating from within the surrounding community. A lock-in is a less restrictive posture. It increases school security while retaining the ability to continue to operate normally within the school. All outside activities are suspended until the lock-in is lifted. Updates will be posted as they become available.

Local Businesses man Cheston Browning has passed away
Cheston Browning, 80 of Oakland passed away Oakland. He and his wife Earldean were owners of Tommy's Market, Cumberland, and lived in Cumberland until his retirement to Florida. From 1972 to 1977 he was general manager of Browning's Oakland market. As vice president in charge of corporate development for Browning's, Inc., from 1977 to 1981. In 1981, bought and operated Tommy's Market, Cumberland, until 1991. From the time he was a teenager, he loved music and was in a barbershop choral group and sang tenor in a barbershop quartet named the Ritz Chords for many years.
Arrest made in stolen motor vehicle on Columbia Ave
On November 30th, 2022 at approximately 3:27 pm, the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 600 block of Columbia Avenue for the report of a stolen motor vehicle. An officer made contact with the victim who advised that their vehicle was missing. The victim advised the officer of a possible suspect. A short time later, the vehicle was located on Mechanic Street. The officer contacted the driver, Frank Nicol. Nicol was placed under arrest. He was transported to central booking. Nicol was later seen by a district court commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center held without bond….

On December 1st, 2022, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on David Nicol. The warrant was issued as a result of Nicol failing to register as a sex offender. Nicol was transported to central booking. He was later seen by a district court commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond. Devon Burroughs sentenced to 40-year incarceration for the murder of Saiquan Jenkins
Allegany County Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Getty Thursday sentenced Devon Burroughs, 17 to a maximum 40-year incarceration with 10 years suspended for the murder of 17-year-old Saiquan Jenkins. Burroughs was charged as an adult with first-degree murder for the Oct. 28, 2021, stabbing death of Jenkins. Burroughs will serve half of his sentence before he is eligible for parole after which he will be on supervised probation for 5 years. Both students at Fort Hill High School. Cumberland city officials working on short and long term solutions of deteriorating athletic facilities
There are any number of public baseball and soccer fields, tennis courts, playgrounds and tracks across Cumberland that have fallen into disrepair- and city officials are working on both short and long term solutions.
