On Saturday, May 13, 2023 at approximately 10:53 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business on Queen City Drive for a disturbance.  Police arrived and contacted the staff who reported that a male subject, who was now down the street, had been at the store causing a disturbance.  She explained that the subject was upset because she would not sell him tobacco products without identification.  Officers contacted the subject and identified him as Matthew Greening.  Greening began yelling at officers and creating a disturbance.  Greening was warned to keep his voice down.  Further investigation was completed…

CRIMINAL SUMMONSES SERVED

On Saturday, May 13, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served two criminal summonses on Antonio Limon.  One summons was issued as the result of an officer observing Limon operating a motor vehicle on April 24, 2023.  The officer confirmed that Limon did not have a valid driver’s license.  The other summons was issued as the result of an incident that occurred on May 8, 2023 when an officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that Limon was operating.  Limon was uncooperative and refused to listen to the officer’s commands.  Limon had to be restrained…

Gov. Justice appoints Robert E. Ryan to the 21st Judicial Circuit

Gov. Jim Justice announced today that he has appointed Robert E. Ryan as Judge for the 21st Judicial Circuit, which serves Mineral, Grant, and Tucker counties. Ryan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from WVU in 1996 and then went on to attend Washington and Lee University School of Law where he obtained his Juris Doctor in 2000. Gov. Justice appoints Paul W. Gwaltney, Jr. to the 17th Judicial Circuit

Gov. Jim Justice announced that he has appointed Paul W. Gwaltney, Jr. as Judge for the 17th Judicial Circuit which serves Monongalia County. Gwaltney graduated in the top 15 percent of his class at WVU College of Law in 2003, where he served on West Virginia Law Review as an associate editor and an executive research editor.  In 2013, Gwaltney was named a “Rising Star” by the Super Lawyers publication for his outstanding contributions to the legal profession. In his spare time, Gwaltney proudly attends Calvary Chapel Morgantown, where his family has worshiped for the last ten years. 

MARYLAND STATE POLICE CONDUCT FELONY TRAFFIC STOP, MAN ARRESTED FOR KIDNAPPING

Maryland State Police arrested a Prince George’s County man for kidnapping and other related charges after conducting a felony traffic stop last night in Lanham. The accused is identified as Dennis Bell, 62, of Lanham. Bell faces 14 criminal charges including first degree assault, kidnapping, false imprisonment, fourth degree sex offense, possession of suspected crack cocaine and driving while impaired. Bell is also facing 19 traffic charges related to the incident. Bell is currently being held at the Upper Marlboro Department of Corrections. The victim is not being identified at this time. One Dead in Fatal Crash on Route 36

On Friday May 12, 2023 at approximately 4:18 p.m. a single motor vehicle crash in the area of Barton Hill on Route 36 was reported to the Allegany County Joint Communications Center. Upon arrival, units found that a passenger vehicle left the roadway and collided with a guardrail and flipped over multiple times. The driver of the passenger car, 40-year-old Jacob Paul Prock of Westernport, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Maryland Officials Urge a “Medicaid Check-In”

Maryland officials are urging a “Medicaid Check-in” for the 1.8 million Medicaid participants who may need to reapply for benefits during the redetermination period, which runs from April2023-May 2024.  The push comes as the end of the national COVID state of emergency means that Medicaid recipients will no longer be automatically re-enrolled.

Josh Harris Group to Buy Washington Commanders

About a month after both sides reached an agreement in principle, Dan Snyder has finalized a deal to sell the Washington Commanders to a group led by Josh Harris for a reported $6.05 billion, the highest price paid for a North American sports franchise in history.  The deal includes FedEx Field and the Commanders practice facilities in Ashburn, VA.  Snyder bought the Washington franchise in 1999 for $750 million.  The deal still needs formal approval by league owners, which is expected to happen at a league meeting later this month.  

PG Executive Alsobrooks Declares for Senate Seat

Another candidate has declared in the race to replace Maryland US Senator Ben Cardin.  Angela Alsobrooks, the chief executive of Prince George’s County announced Tuesday that she will run in the Democratic primary, joining Representative David Trone among several other Democrats. 

State Attorney General Anthony Brown spoke on Digital Ad Tax

The Digital Ad Tax is back for businesses doing online advertising in Maryland.  The Supreme Court of Maryland reversed the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County, who struck down Maryland’s digital ad tax in a case brought by Comcast and Verizon. The tax provides critical funding for the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, education spending designed create access to equitable education opportunities for all students in the state. The tax affects revenue made by companies on digital advertising shown in the state.  State Attorney General Anthony Brown said the ruling on the tax “will support our collective goal of transforming schools across…
