Fourth Friday Tea Series is returning to the Allegany County Historical Society

The Fourth Friday Tea Series is returning to the Allegany County Historical Society this month. The series had been put on hold for three years due to the COVID Pandemic’s concerns and restrictions. Historical Society Vice President Debbie Grimm announced the return of the events starting April 28th with a Gatsby-era tea featuring a local author hat focuses on fictional writing with historical settings. $2.6 million surplus for proposed city of Cumberland 2024 budget

At the Cumberland Mayor and City Council work session Tuesday evening, a very positive picture of the city was presented by Comptroller Mark Gandolfi.  The city is looking at a surplus of $2.6 million for the proposed FY2024 budget.  Mayor Ray Morriss was asked about the state of the city right now and was positive in response.

Women’s Health Center dropped its lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of West Virginia abortion law

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said the Women’s Health Center of West Virginia has dropped its lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the state’s abortion law.  The lawsuit was filed by the Women’s Health Center of West Virginia against the president and secretary of the West Virginia Board of Medicine. The Attorney General intervened on behalf of the state to defend the new abortion statute. Garrett County fire investigation

Twenty five firefighters took two hours to put out a fire in Garrett County Monday evening.  The call came in at 5:10 p.m. for the blaze at 684 Dung Hill road in Grantsville.  The home is owned by Wayne Platter.  No injuries were reported and losses total $100,000.  The cause is under investigation.

National Go Orange Day

Wednesday, April 19 is National Go Orange Day as designated by the federal government.  The day is set aside to remind transportation officials and the general public about the importance of work zone safety.

Maryland State Police Plan Prescription Drug Take Back Day

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – The Maryland State Police, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), are asking residents to dispose of unneeded prescription medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 22, 2023 at Maryland State Police barracks statewide. According to Maryland Department of Health statistics, from January 2022 to January 2023, there were 2,154 opioid-related fatal overdoses recorded in the state and of those, 320 were prescription opioid-related fatalities. ACM Names Field for Retired Coach

Coach Steve Bazarnic dedicated his professional career to collegiate baseball. To honor his love of the game and extraordinary contributions to the college, Allegany College of Maryland will formally name its baseball field, the Steve Bazarnic Field. Bazarnic, who retired in 2019 after only 48 years of service, established, developed, and led ACM’s nationally recognized baseball program.
