Police Make Arrest on Bench Warrant

On Monday, April 17th, 2023, The Cumberland City Police arrested Sterling Marie Wilson, 26, of Cumberland MD. Wilson was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on February 28th, 2023. The warrant alleges that Wilson failed to appear in District Court on that date for previous charges of obstructing, hindering, and false statement. Wilson was taken before the District Court Commissioner for her Initial Appearance where she was released on a $1000 unsecured personal bond. Cumberland Woman Arrested After Disturbance

On Monday, April 17th, 2023, The Cumberland City Police responded to a residence in the 300 block of Reynolds St for the report of a disturbance. Upon arrival on scene, officers located two subjects actively involved in a verbal altercation. It was learned that the two subjects had both been drinking and began to argue over domestic type issues. Throughout the investigation, one of the subjects continued to yell and create further disturbances. They were ordered numerous times to cease their disruptive behaviors, but their actions continued. County Sheriff Craig Robertson spoke on the overall importance of safety for anyone planning to protest

Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson was a guest at last Thursday’s Allegany Republican Social Club meeting where he spoke on the overall importance of safety for anyone planning to protest in the area of the abortion clinic opening in June in the Rawlings area.  The clinic sits right along the heavily traveled highway on Route 220 and as such presents particular safety issues.  

Governor Wes Moore says state is going to be leading the nation in abortion rights

Maryland Governor Wes Moore was on ABC’s This Week on Sunday to talk about how the state is going to be leading the nation in abortion rights.  The state is currently creating a 3-year stockpile of the abortion drug mifepristone following a Texas district court judge’s ruling striking down FDA approval of the pill – which has been approved for use since 2000.  Further, the governor wants to enshrine abortion rights into the state’s constitution.    

Mini-Marathon and 1-Mile walk this Saturday at Greenway Avenue Stadium

The Greenway Avenue Stadium Capital Improvement Fund is planning a Mini-Marathon and 1-Mile walk for Saturday April 22 at Greenway.  Money generated from the event will go to upgrades including lighting, sound system and press box improvements. George Brown, Race Director for the event, describes what the stadium has been able to offer with some of the updates and future plans. Participants can choose to do the 2.62 mile mini-marathon or one mile walk/run. West Virginia working to alleviate shortage of jail employees throughout the state

A bipartisan group of lawmakers in West Virginia are working to alleviate the shortage of jail employees throughout the state. A state of emergency, allowing the WV National Guard to help alleviate the staffing shortages has been in place since last August and will need to continue, according to officials.  The state has a 27 percent vacancy rate for corrections workers across the system, with 8 facilities having 40 percent vacancies or more.  Lawmakers are seeking to create hiring and retention incentives, including higher pay and bonuses. 

Allegany County Public Schools Pre-K and Kindergarten Registration open through May 9

Registration for Allegany County Public Schools Pre-K and Kindergarten will be open through May 9, 2023. Registration is by appointment only at the school your child will attend. Programs are available for children ages 3-5. Kindergarten programs are for children age five on or before 9/1/2023 and are mandatory for students meeting the age requirement. Those wishing to register will need required documentation including proof of residency, child’s birth certificate, child’s SSN, record of immunizations, and parent photo ID. Maryland hoping to drive down the number of traffic fatalities

Maryland is hoping that new data released by the state can help drive down the number of traffic fatalities in the state. In 2022 and 2021 there were 563 traffic fatalities throughout the state. Aggressive driving, impairment from alcohol and drugs and distracted driving were the biggest causes of roadway fatalities. In Washington county alone 11 of the 21 fatalities last year were the result of aggressive driving. 

Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for West Virginia families

More West Virginia families will qualify for the  for Women, Infants, and Children as a result of updated eligibility guidelines released by the US Department of Agriculture.  A family of four can now earn up to $55,500 and year and qualify for WIC benefits. The state is encouraging all those who qualify to apply for benefits.
