Abortion Clinic Drops Challenge to WV State’s Abortion Law
West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said the Women’s Health Center of West Virginia has dropped its lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the state’s abortion law. “This issue is very near and dear to my heart. Downtown Construction Underway
Downtown Cumberland construction is underway. The work has been focused on the area from Mechanic Street to Liberty Street. The planters down the center of the pedestrian mall have been removed, as well as the plaza next to CBIZ and the parklet at Baltimore and Liberty Streets. Construction barrels have been put in place to block off the center of the mall, and larger barriers will be in place soon. LaVale Library Closed on April 21 For Maintenance
The LaVale Library will be closed this Friday, April 21 for necessary maintenance to the air conditioning system in preparation for the summer months. The Frostburg and South Cumberland Libraries will open 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for their normal Friday business hours.
Fayette Street Paving Update
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Belt Paving, would like to notify the public that the dates of construction will be adjusted due to weekend storms. The new construction dates will be on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, through Monday, April 24, 2023, Fayette Street from Allegany Street to Lefevre Road will be paved. The road will be flagged during construction to route vehicles around the construction site. Detours will be set up as needed to direct traffic around the site. Wife of the Late Senator Ed Mason Passes Away
The wife of the late Senator Ed Mason has passed away. Sara Jane (Dickerhoof) Mason, 91, of Cumberland, passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was employed by Sacred Heart Hospital, and later, as a public health nurse at the Allegany County Health Department, from which she retired after 20 years of service. Jane was a past president of the Junior Women's Civic Club for the year 1965-66, was a lifelong member of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and later, the Western Maryland Hospital Auxiliary. CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED
On April 16th, 2023 the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Ricky Alan Vecchioni Jr . The summons was issued as result of a disturbance that occurred at Constitution Park on April 11th, 2023. The officer conducted an investigation and found Vecchioni to be in possession of brass knuckles. The officer later filed charges on Vecchioni at District Court. Fundraiser dedicated in memory area sports supporter Dave Christopher
The Greenway Avenue Stadium Capital Improvement Fund is planning a Mini-Marathon and 1-Mile walk for Saturday April 22 at Greenway. Money generated from the event will go to upgrades including lighting, sound system and press box improvements. The fundraiser will be dedicated this year to the memory of long-time area sports supporter Dave Christopher. Participants can choose to do the 2.62 mile mini-marathon or one mile walk/run. Also this year will be the Toddler Trot for ages 1-3 and Youngster Run for youth 4-6. Winners will receive plaques made by the Career Center.
Delegate Buckel reflects on Shell building in Barton
Delegate Jason Buckel was a guest on the Dave Norman show where they discussed that the county’s failure to have RS Bio Therapeutics locate in the county was tied up in the possibility of tire recycling company MNM&D, Inc. committing to come to the area. Buckel talked about the shell building in Barton that the county has had ready for a business tenant for seven-plus years.
Ruth Davis-Rogers, Historic Preservation Planner gave some background on City Historic Preservation Plan
The City of Cumberland has contracted with the Lakota Group out of Chicago to create a Historic Preservation Plan for the City. The plan is designed to integrate historic preservation and revitalization efforts with city planning, economic development, heritage tourism, and housing. A public meeting will be held on May 3 at City Hall for citizens and property owners to share ideas and opinions with the Lakota Group. Ruth Davis-Rogers, Historic Preservation Planner, gave some background on the consultancy group from Chicago.
