Opening of C&O Canal National Historical Park Headquarters
Lt. Governor Boyd K. Rutherford today celebrated the opening of the new Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal National Historical Park headquarters in Williamsport. The new 20,000 square foot facility provides better access to the C&O Canal and creates more than 70 local jobs. The lieutenant governor was joined for the ceremony by officials from the from the National Park Service, the Maryland Department of Commerce, Washington County, and the Town of Williamsport.
Threats Investigated at Washington and Braddock Middle Schools
Today, Wednesday, a school threat investigation was conducted by the administration at Washington Middle School and the School Resource Officer. As a result of interviews and the subsequent investigation, the threat was determined to be non-credible, and there is no danger to students or staff. Additionally, today, Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at Braddock Middle School, administrators received information that a student was in possession of a handgun. The student was located, and the weapon in question was found to be an air-soft toy gun. An investigation is ongoing at this time.
Cumberland man charged with stalking, theft, vagabond
The Cumberland Police served a Criminal Summons on Herman Grant Dennison Martz, age 23, of Cumberland, MD. The Summons charged Martz with Stalking, Theft less than $100, and Rogue and Vagabond due to an incident on September 17th, 2022 where Martz stole a license plate from a vehicle. He was released pending trial.
City man arrested for False Report
The Cumberland Police served an Arrest Warrant on Brian Elsworth Johnson, age 58, of Cumberland, MD. The Warrant charged Johnson with False Statement to a Police Officer, Obstructing Justice, and Obstructing and Hindering. The charges stemmed from an investigation regarding false allegations that Johnson made. On September 5th, 2022, Johnson arrived at the Cumberland Police Station to report that he had been assaulted by a female, and that a knife had been involved. Citizens concerned with plan for Union Rescue Mission to relocate to North Centre Street

City officials open bids for Baltimore Street Access Project today
City officials will learn later today if adequate funding has been budgeted for the Baltimore Street Access Project- or whether they will have to scramble to secure additional dollars. Contractor bids for the $10 million project to renovate the downtown mall will be opened this afternoon at City Hall. The renovations planned for the downtown mall include replacing underground utility lines and installing high-capacity broadband fiber before reinstalling Baltimore Street through the pedestrian mall and adding an updated streetscape with trees, flowers and shrubs. LaVale Library Official Reopening
The LaVale Library at 815 National Highway will welcome the public back this weekend Sept. 23-24 to mark the official reopening of the branch after a nearly two-year renovation and expansion.
