Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week Starts Sunday
The Shop Maryland Tax-Free week returns on Sunday and runs through next Saturday, August 20th, just in time for back-to-school shopping. Comptroller Peter Franchot announced he wants residents to take advantage of this time – not only for their children's back-to-school supplies, but for also themselves. Any piece of clothing or footwear under $100 will be exempt from the state's sales tax. The first $40 of any backpack is also tax free.
City of Cumberland Authorized to Advertise Baltimore Street Access Project
The Cumberland Economic Development Corporation announced Thursday that the City of Cumberland has received authorization to advertise the Baltimore Street Access Project, which will put the project out to bid. The project, which will include replacing underground utilities and re-opening the street to vehicular traffic and limited parking, has been years in making, originally discussed in 2014. The hope is that it will help drive economic development opportunities in Cumberland’s historic downtown city center and beyond. Chinese Bandits Final Performance Fundraiser
The Chinese Bandits, one of the area’s most popular music groups, is calling it a career after half a century of entertaining, with a final show set for tomorrow (Saturday) night. The band, which still features two original members, played its first show in 1973 at the Appletree Inn in Hancock. The final performance will be a fundraiser for the Bishop Walsh Alumni Association from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Bishop Walsh School. As a result of the Chase Street shooting investigation of August 9th an arrest warrant was obtained for Aiyontae Michael Moye, age 18, of Baltimore charging him with home invasion, felony assault, use of a firearm in a crime of violence and related charges. On August 11, 2022, at approximately 6:00 am members of the Maryland State Apprehension Task Force assisted by the US Marshals service observed Moye in the northwest area of Baltimore. Gov. Justice declares State of Emergency to address jail staffing shortages
Gov. Jim Justice today issued a State of Emergency to address critical staffing shortages at correctional facilities in West Virginia. The State of Emergency empowers the Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard to support the Department of Homeland Security with National Guard personnel sufficient to alleviate staffing shortages at adult and juvenile correctional and detention facilities. Oakland man Arrested for Disorderly Conduct
On Wednesday,at approximately 7:03 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to UPMC Western Maryland for a subject requesting to speak to an officer. The subject was identified as Dustin Walk. He was argumentative with officers and the staff requested that Walk leave the property. Walk was then escorted off of the property. Cumberland Police Serve Body Attachment
On Wednesday, August 10, 2022, the Cumberland Police Department served a body attachment on Lee Ann Harris. The body attachment was issued as a result of Harris failing to comply with an order of the court. Water main break in the area of S. George Street
There is currently a water main break in the area of S. George Street and Baltimore Street. Water is flowing into surrounding alleys and streets. Repair crews have been contacted and will be responding. A section of S. George Street is currently closed. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and find an alternate route while repairs are made.
Heritage Days Committee Expanding Education
During a planning meeting, the Allegany County Historical Society Heritage Days committee reviewed the public safety plan and discussed expanding heritage education events. In addition it was announced that ACHS was able to successfully secure two matching grants through the State of Maryland. Both a $5,000 mini-grant award through the local heritage area and a $25,000 grant through the annual grant process directed by the Maryland Heritage Area Authority will go toward expanding heritage education and reenactment activities provided at the Wills Creek Muster during the September 10-11 Heritage Days Festival. Teacher Shortage Exodus “a crisis”
Much of the United States is struggling with an extreme teacher shortage and Maryland is no exception. The State Board of Education said 5,516 teachers left in 2022. The majority of the educators voluntarily resigned and others left for a myriad of reasons including retirement. Cheryl Bost, the teachers' union president, has described the exodus as "a crisis." Not viewed as a significant problem yet for Allegany County’s public school system- routine measures are taken to ensure that adequate teaching staff is in place.
