CUMBERLAND, Md. (Jan. 20, 2023) – Allegany College of Maryland recognized 166 graduates from nine states at the conclusion of the recent fall 2022 session. They earned a total of 181 associate degrees and certificates through the college’s in-person and online programs. Members of ACM’s 2022 class and the degree or certificate they received are listed below according to state and place of residence. Unless noted otherwise, the awards refer to degrees. Gov. Justice tests positive for COVID-19 for a second time, continues to recover at home

Gov. Jim Justice tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week. It's the second time he's tested positive for the virus.  The Governor, who is fully vaccinated and boosted, is recovering but still experiencing mild symptoms and is isolating at home.  He is being treated by several physicians, including his family physician Dr. Gary Poling, DO, and Dr. Clay Marsh, MD, the State COVID-19 Czar.

Historical Society sets calendar, launches membership drive

The Allegany County Historical Society (ACHS) has launched a 2023 Membership Drive and published the preliminary program calendar for the coming year, according to an announcement from ACHS Vice President Debbie Grimm. In making the announcement, Ms. Grimm noted that ACHS is focused on increasing community involvement in a non-profit organization that dates back to 1937. “Since restarting our post-COVID public programs at Heritage Days in 2021, we have been creating high quality programs and catching up on the condition of our historic facilities. BENCH WARRANT SERVED

On Friday, January 20, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Lewis Albaladejo.  The warrant was issued as the result of Albaladejo failing to appear in court on January 6, 2023.  He was originally charged with Trespass-Posted Property.  He was arrested and transported to Central Booking.  Albaladejo was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and posted a $1,000 unsecured personal bond. The annual Mountain Maryland PACE Reception and Breakfast in Annapolis ended on a high note with U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and the state’s new Comptroller Brooke Lierman addressing the overflow crowd at the Westin Annapolis Hotel. Md. Gov. Wes Moore approves $3.5 million for abortion care training

Part of the $69 million in Maryland state funding released by Gov. Wes Moore  will allow the state to set up an abortion care training program. The expansion of abortion care training statewide was part of a law passed during the last General Assembly session — before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case which enshrined abortion rights nationwide. When the bill passed last year, then-Gov. Larry Hogan vetoed the legislation, arguing it would be a setback for women’s health care and safety. Under previous law, abortions could only be performed by licensed physicians.
