A former educator, coach and athletic director in Mineral and Grant counties has been arrested on five felony counts of child pornography. Travis Scott Liller, 34, was charged Monday in Mineral County with three counts of distributing or exhibiting material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. In Grant County, he was charged on the same day with two counts of use of minors in filming sexually explicit conduct. Liller posted a $10,000 bond in Mineral County and a $40,000 bond in Grant for his release from custody. Liller was a driver’s education instructor, coach and athletic director at Keyser High…
Longtime local dentist Dr. John Carroll died August 27 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Dr. Carroll practiced dentistry in Cumberland for 35 years, with his practice initially located on Greene Street and then moving to South Centre Street. Dr. Carroll will be cremated and there will be no services.
ARREST WARRANT SERVED On Friday, August 29, 2025 the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Andrew Powell III. The warrant was issued as the result of an incident that occurred on August 25, 2025. On this date at approximately 4:11 PM, officers responded to the 200 block of Park Street for an assault. Police contacted the alleged victim who reported that she was assaulted by Andrew Powell who had already fled the area. Officers observed that the victim had sustained injuries. The Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigations Unit (C3I) and the Cumberland Police Department conducted an investigation that resulted in the execution of multiple search and seizure warrants within the city limits of Cumberland during the early morning hours of August 29. This investigation was initiated in response to a series of motor vehicle thefts and numerous incidents of motor vehicle tampering reported in the area. It also involved firearms-related offenses, including incidents in which suspects discharged a handgun at victims. AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism had its funding reinstated. The Office of Management and Budget will release over $184 million which AmeriCorps plans to award to service programs across the country. In April, the Trump administration planned to eliminate nearly 90 percent of AmeriCorps’ workforce and close $400 million worth of AmeriCorps-supported programs. Among the programs is Frostburg State University’s ASTAR, which provides literacy, environmental, and food assistance services in Western Maryland.

The Trump Administration has removed union protections for thousands of employees at the Department of Veterans Affairs across the state of Virginia.
