Cumberland Female Arrested for Assault
On October 7th, 2022 at approximately 10:10 am officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 200 block of Cole Street for a reported assault. Upon officer’s arrival they spoke with the victim who advised that they had been assaulted by Sharon McLuckie. The victim advised that McLuckie had closed their leg in a door and had shoved them to the ground. The officers were able to observe evidence of an assault and placed McLuckie under arrest. Gaming Revenue down at Rocky Gap
Casino gaming revenue was largely lower in Maryland in September compared to a year ago, with the biggest year-over-year decrease at MGM National Harbor. Maryland Lottery and Gaming reports the state’s six casinos generated $159.3 million in gaming revenue in September — 3.7% lower than a year earlier. Maryland collects $68 million of total gaming revenue for state programs, most of which goes to the state’s Education Trust Fund. North Centre Street Fest Today
The second North Centre Street Festival of the year will be held today and it will include an Italian theme that harkens back to the popular Christopher Columbus Italian Festivals of the 1980’s. The festival is scheduled from noon until 9 PM during which Ristorante Ottaviani’s 17th anniversary will be celebrated. West Side street work scheduled
Several streets on Cumberland's West Side will be temporarily closed next week as crews complete chip sealing work. The work is scheduled Oct. 11-12. Each street will be closed as work is in progress and opened when finished. The affected streets are Thompson Avenue, James Street, Fairmont Avenue, Arnett Terrace, Locust Street, Robbins Terrace, Lynn Street, Dunbar Drive and Kean Terrace. Monument Dedication Saturday for City Policeman Killed in 1907
A monument dedication will take place today for the only Cumberland Police officer ever killed in the line of duty. According to media reports from the time, Patrolman August Baker was shot Oct. 3, 1907, while attempting to make an arrest. He died from his wounds two days later and was buried at Greenmount Cemetery on Shades Lane on Oct. 7, 1907. The effort to place a monument on Baker’s grave site has been led by volunteers with the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization. Ed Taylor Jr is president of the organization. Maryland isn’t set to reach watershed restoration goals by 2025
A report from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation shows that the state is not on track to meet its watershed restoration goals for 2025. The assessment found Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania are behind in addressing stormwater and agriculture pollution. The report did show Maryland is on track when it comes to getting nitrogen levels under control. It took several issues into account, including systematic problems and failures at the Backwater treatment plant in Dundalk. Now, officials plan to meet next week to consider a new timeline for the pollution agreement. Only West Virginia and Washington, D.C., were on track to meet pollution reduction goals
Accident at Braddock Road and Sunset Drive
At apprcximately 3pm today, Friday, a multi-vehicle accident occured at the intersection of Sunset Drive and Braddock Road. Emergency services responded. The roads were closed for approximately 45 minutes.
Biden visits Volvo plant in Hagerstown
President Joe Biden toured the Volvo plant in Washington County on Friday, spending time with workers while he was there and marking National Manufacturing Day. The plant, which employs about 1,700 people, makes engines, transmissions, and axels for Volvo and Mack trucks. After landing at Hagerstown Regional Airport around 12:10 p.m., Biden headed to the plant, where he talked about building the economy from the bottom up and middle out
