ACIT Fans Will Need Masks at FSU

The Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament will be held this weekend at Frostburg State University. Fans are advised that mask regulations are still in effect for indoor activities.   The FSU Media Relations Departmnet advises: "The same rules apply as for FSU indoor sports. Masks are required indoors in the presence of others. (Athletes do not have to wear masks while competing.)"

WV DHHR Issues COVID-19 Update

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of March 9, 2022, there are currently 1,436 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 18 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,488 deaths attributed to COVID-19. Man Charged With Arson in Hagerstown Incident

 An Anne Arundel County man faces arson charges after setting a Hagerstown trailer on fire and then barricading himself in a house he was helping to work on yesterday. David A. Wilhelm, 39, was working on a home yesterday afternoon at 20033 Cool Hollow Road when he suddenly became agitated with the property owner. Wilhelm, who lived in a trailer behind the home, ran inside and intentionally set a mattress on fire inside the trailer's bedroom. FSU Continues Masking Policy…For Now

Frostburg State University will continue to require masks and other COVID-19 protocols for the time being.  FSU President Dr. Ron Nowaczyk recently updated the campus with this message: As we continue to monitor state, local and campus COVID indicators, it is notable that conditions are improving across all metrics in our area. Police Respond to Overdose Calls in North End

On March 8th, 2022 the Cumberland Police Department and the Cumberland Fire Department responded to a Columbia Street and a Leiper Street address for reported overdoses. Lives saving measures were performed and the subjects were transported to UPMC Western Maryland for further treatment. As a reminder, the Allegany County Health Department provides Naloxone Training for the Community.

General Assembly Makes Tax Cuts

A little more than a month remains in this session of the Maryland General Assembly- and lawmakers are scrambling to push through legislation centered on taxes, crime reform and recreational marijuana. On taxes, the House of Delegates recently unanimously approved a series of tax cuts. One makes diapers exempt from the sales tax. Another exempts oral hygiene products from the sales tax and a third gives employers a full state tax credit for participating in a federal program to hire workers with significant barriers to employment. Legal Bills Mounting as Court Orders Candy to Pay $1.2M in Fees

The legal bills are mounting for the Tri-State Zoological Park of Western Maryland and it’s owner/operator Robert Candy.  The U.S. District Court on Tuesday ordered Candy to pay more than $1.2 million  in attorneys’ fees, expert fees, and costs to PETA, which incurred the expenses during its successful Endangered Species Act  lawsuit against the local roadside zoo.  PETA’s win in court resulted in the transfer of three big cats to an accredited sanctuary and a ruling prohibiting Tri-State from owning or possessing endangered or threatened species. Mayor and City Council Lift Mask Mandate in Closed Session

Property acquisitions, including a parcel on Fayette Street to facilitate the renovation of the Fayette Street bridge, were topics of discussions behind closed doors Tuesday afternoon as the Cumberland Mayor and City Council met in executive session.  No public session was held. In other city news, the mask mandate that had been in place at City Hall has been lifted as COVID-19 numbers are continuing to decline- with mask wearing now suggested, but not required. Miller Comments on Downtown Help with Construction

A binder of information pertaining to everything business and property owners will need to know in advance of the Baltimore Street Access Project is being finalized and will be hand delivered in the coming weeks.  During Tuesday’s monthly meeting of the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation, executive director Matt Miller said that steps are being taken to help businesses along the downtown pedestrian mall during construction related to the nearly $10 million  project.
