Franklin Street Closed Monday
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of First Energy, would like to notify the public that a portion of Franklin Street between N Centre Street and Columbia Ave will be closed on Monday, 8/11/25 from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM in order to replace a broken pole. Please follow all detour signage during this time frame and traffic will be fully restored after work completes at 2:00 PM. Monument for Black Revolutionary War Heroes Moves Forward
The plan to fund a monument to honor Black Marylanders who fought in the Revolutionary War has been approved by the state’s Board of Public Works. The monument would be placed on the grounds of the Maryland State House. The monument would be placed on the side of the statehouse that previously featured the statue of Roger B. Taney, the nation’s fifth chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Taney is remembered for writing the majority opinion in the 1857 Dred Scott case, which ruled Black people, whether free or enslaved, could not be considered citizens of the United States. Longtime South End Pastor Dies
A longtime local pastor and leader in South Cumberland has passed away. Reverend Wayne Turner died Thursday at the age of 86. Reverend Turner was a constant presence at Fort Hill High School, leading prayers at many events. The Adams Family Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Greenway Avenue Stadium Fundraiser Saturday Morning
A walk to benefit Greenway Avenue Stadium will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the stadium. The walk is sponsored by the Greenway Avenue Stadium Capital Improvement Fund. The entry fee is $10 for those aged kindergarten through college and $20 for adults. Commemorative T-shirts will be available while supplies last. Registration is from 8-8:55 a.m., and refreshments will be provided.
ARREST WARRANT SERVED
On Thursday, August 7, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Joycelyn Archie. The warrant was issued by the District Court of Maryland for Washington County, charging Archie with Trespass: Private Property. Archie was arrested and later seen by a District Court Commissioner for a bond hearing. At the conclusion, she was released on her personal recognizance. CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED
On Thursday, August 7, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Brian Hutzler. The summons was issued as the result of an incident that occurred on July 30, 2025 at approximately 9:51 AM, when an officer observed Hutzler cross the railroad tracks from Henderson Avenue onto Queen City Drive which is posted ‘No Trespassing’. Police filed an application for charges against Hutzler at the District Court of Allegany County. Hutzler signed for his copy of the summons and he was released pending trial. Maryland Tax-Free Week Begins Sunday
Shop Maryland Tax Free Week begins this Sunday and runs through August 16 ahead of the new school year. With costs continuing to go up, Comptroller Brooke Lierman encourages shopping during the tax holiday as a way for Marylanders to save money and keep the economy moving. Shoppers will not pay the state 6% sales and use tax for clothing and shoes priced under $100 and the first $40 for backpacks. The tax holiday started in 2007.
Dulles Officers Intercept Marijuana Bound For Germany
US Customs and Border Patrol Agents at Washington Dulles International Airport intercepted 59 pounds of marijuana on Sunday discovered in the baggage of a traveler destined for Germany. Aleshia Pinheiro of Las Vegas was arrested and charged with transporting a controlled substance into the Commonwealth of Virginia and possession with intent to distribute. Both are felony narcotics charges. The marijuana had a street value of over $200,000.
