Passing of CPD canine officer

It is with sadness that the Cumberland Police Department announces the passing of canine officer Ralf.  Ralf was a valuable member of the department and a partner and friend to Cpl. Hedrick.  Ralf was placed on duty in November 2011, and assigned to his partner Cpl. Jeremy Hedrick.  Ralf spent many years assigned to the Allegany County Narcotics Task Force and eventually moved to the patrol division also serving as a School Resource Officer canine.   Ralf was responsible for recovering a lot of contraband throughout the years and helped get a lot of drug dealers off the streets.   Ralf retired…

Man Arrested on Assault Charges

On Monday, April 11, 2022 at approximately 6:17 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence on Potomac Street for an assault.  Upon their arrival, they contacted one of the residents who reported that Dustin Walk woke him up, jumped on him, and repeatedly struck him all over his body with open hands and closed fists.  The victim explained to the officers that he was able to break free from the assault and call the police.  After further investigation, Walk was arrested and transported to the police station for processing.  Walk was later seen by a District…

Police Serve Bench Warrants

On Monday, April 11, 2022 the Cumberland Police Department served two bench warrants on Joshua Buzzard.  The warrants were issued as a result of Buzzard failing to appear for his court cases.  In one case, he was originally charged with Theft $100 to under $1500 and in the other case, he was originally charged with Malicious Destruction Property less than $1000.  Buzzard was released on his personal recognizance. Two Historic Lights Donated to Giarritta Park

As you travel through downtown Cumberland especially over by City Hall be sure to check out Giarritta park. UPMC Western Maryland donated two lights that at one time graced the entrance of Allegany Hospital on Decatur Street.    Let's Beautify Cumberland on Friday along with City street department workers Jason and Brandon moved the historic lights to the park on North Center Street. Giarritta park was named after Dr Nick Giarritta who began his career in Cumberland at the Allegany hospital. Ed Mullaney from Let's Beautify Cumberland  

Two Family Downtown Events Scheduled This Weekend

Downtown Cumberland has two family friendly events this Saturday April 16th just in time for Easter.  Easter Bunny will be at the McCoury stage from 11:00am till 1:00pm to visit with children and pose for photos. The first 300 children will receive an Easter goodies bag. Chalk it up to Civility, a community collaboration will kick off this Saturday at 10:30am at the McCurry stage of Baltimore Street. Hogan Disappointed in Lack of Extending Gas Tax Suspension

As the 2022 session of the Maryland General Assembly wound down, Governor Larry Hogan said he is disappointed that lawmakers wouldn't act to extend the suspension of the gasoline tax…     The 30 days supension is due to expire on April 16. Edwards and Beitzel Wrap Up Final General Assembly

Unless there is a special session, the legislative careers of District 1 Senator George Edwards and Delegate Wendell Beitzel ended at midnight last night with the conclusion of the 2022 session of the Maryland General Assembly.   Late last week, Senate President Bill Ferguson gave Edwards the opportunity to wrap up his 40 years in Annapolis, which included 24 in the House and 16 in the Senate. Cumberland Police Announce Saturday Street Closures

The Cumberland City Police Department would like to announce the following street closures and parking restrictions that will take place for the family-friendly events in the downtown area on Saturday, April 16, 2022. Liberty Street between Frederick Street and Pershing Street. Centre Street between Pershing Street and Frederick Street. Street and parking restrictions are expected from 9:00am until 2:00pm.
