Frostburg State University Sets Virtual Commencement
Frostburg State University will recognize its spring 2021 graduates with a virtual commencement celebration on Friday, May 14, on the FSU website at www.frostburg.edu/commencement. Last week, graduates had an opportunity to participate in a “grad walk” featuring FSU President Ronald Nowaczyk offering individual graduate recognition as students crossed the stage. This week, FSU’s social media features student-decorated mortarboards, graduate photos, a welcome video from Frostburg alumni and other posts leading up to Friday. Cumberland Police Announce Summer Youth Camp
The Cumberland Police Department Summer Youth Camp will take place on Monday, June 14, through Friday, June 18, 2021 from 8am to 4pm each day. The camp will be held at the Salvation Army on Somerville Avenue in Cumberland. The summer youth camp is held in cooperation with the Salvation Army as well as many local businesses. The camp is open to all Allegany County students entering the sixth, seventh or eighth grades for the 2021-2022 school year. Allegany County COVID Case Rate Now Over Nine
This Thursday, May 13, a walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinic will be held at the Allegany County Fairgrounds multipurpose building from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. No appointment is necessary. Both the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccines will be offered. Another walk-in clinic, also at the fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m., is slated for Thursday, May 20. Frosh Opposes Kids Instagram Platform
Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh today joined a coalition of 44 attorneys general urging Facebook to abandon its plans to launch a version of Instagram for children under the age of 13, citing serious concerns about the safety and well-being of children and the harm social media poses to young people. Justice: Indoor Mask Mandate to End June 20th
West Virginia Governor Jim Justice announced Friday that he is targeting June 20 to get rid of indoor face masks. State medical experts project that by then, the state will have 65% of all West Virginians 12 and older who are eligible to take the vaccine will have at least has a first dose by that time. City Work Session to Focus on Budget Shortfall
The Cumberland Mayor and City Council will have a second work session focused on the budget Tuesday- having received a preliminary report two weeks ago. At this time there are no plans to increase taxes or raise water, sewer or trash rates. A projected shortfall of more than $400,000 can be largely addressed via funds secured through the American Rescue Plan Act pushed by the Biden administration. City Man Charged with Assault, Destruction of Property
On Sunday, May 9th, 2021 the Cumberland Police Department responded to a W. First Street residence for the report of a fight in progress. When officers arrived, they observed several subjects involved in a disturbance. Officers contacted a male that was yelling who was identified as Clayton Shaquille Booker who continued to cause a disturbance in the officers’ presence.
