Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Jeff Blank, announced several administrative staffing updates effective August 4, 2021. Moriah Cohen will be the new Assistant Principal at Braddock Middle School; Alyssa Werner and John Wade will be the new Assistant Principals at Washington Middle School; and Amy Llewellyn will be the Mental Health Coordinator for the school system. Moriah Cohen earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and her Master of Education degree in School Counseling, both from Frostburg State University. Road Work on Queen City Drive next week could delay traffic
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Columbia Gas of Maryland, has announced that on Tuesday, August 10 beginning at 6:00 am, a detour route will be in place to permit Queen City Drive to be closed from Baltimore Street to the Rose’s Parking Lot Entrance at the McDonald’s Restaurant. The closure is necessary to allow Columbia Gas to excavate pits in order to bore a new gas main underneath the CSX Tracks. Baltimore Reinstates Indoor Mask Mandate
The indoor mask mandate will be reinstated in Baltimore City next week, Mayor Brandon Scott announced Thursday. The mandate goes into effect at 9 a.m. Monday. The mask mandate is universal, applying to anyone regardless of vaccination status. City Health Commissioner Dr. Letitia Dzirasa spoke during Thursday's press briefing and said the Delta variant spread is the key driver in reinstating the indoor mask mandate.
Maryland state employees in congregate settings must get vaccinated or submit to testing
Governor Larry Hogan announced Thursday that state employees who work in congregant settings with vulnerable citizens must be vaccinated or face regular Covid testing. Maryland state employees who work in congregate settings must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination effective Sept. 1. Hogan said state employees working in congregate settings will be required to show proof of vaccination or adhere to strict masking requirements and submit to regular COVID-19 testing
ACPS Reopening Plan Available for Review and Input
A draft copy of the ACPS 2021-2022 Reopening Plan is available for stakeholder review and input on the ACPS website under the Parent Resources section. All Maryland school districts are required to update plans for the coming year and post the updated plans prior to the start of the school year. Stakeholders may provide input on the plan at ASK ACPS or by emailing Mia Cross, Public Information Officer, at mia.cross@acpsmd.org. All input should be provided by Monday, August 16, 2021. Man Killed During Pearl Harbor Attack Laid To Rest in Thomas WV
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced that Navy Patternmaker 1st Class Stanislaw F. Drwall, 25, of Thomas, West Virginia, killed during World War II, was accounted for on March 25, 2021. On Dec. 7, 1941, Drwall was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Drwall. Coast Guard searches for missing teenage swimmer in Ocean City
WBAL reports the U.S. Coast Guard in Ocean City confirmed they are searching for a missing swimmer. The Coast Guard 5th District confirmed the 17-year-old boy went missing around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of 112 street on the ocean side of Ocean City. The Coast Guard said a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter out of Atlantic City along with a number of search boats have been deployed, as well as resources from Maryland Natural Resources Police and the Ocean City Beach Patrol are assisting in the search.
City Resident Allegedly Assaulted by Log-Wielding Man
On August 4th, 2021, The Cumberland City Police Department responded to the area of Elizabeth St and the C&O Canal for the report of an assault. Once on scene, Officers and EMS located a male victim with multiple facial injuries. It was learned that the victim was working on the property when they came upon a makeshift shelter. City Man Charged with Assault, Weapons Violations
On August 4th, 2021, The Cumberland City Police responded to a business in the 400 block of Henderson Ave for the report of an assault. Upon arrival, officers located multiple subjects with physical injuries, some of which required medical attention. Victims of the assault advised that a male subject inside the establishment was seen “showing off” a handgun to others inside. The male was then ordered to leave the business by employees.
