City of Cumberland repairing water leak at Naves Crossroad.
February 7, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 pm, the City of Cumberland water department will be repairing a leak on the 16" main on Naves Crossroad. Please use caution while driving in the area. There will be a change in traffic patterns with flaggers in place. Residents in the area may experience intermittent interruptions of water service. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience while the crew completes their work.
Power outage in the Cumberland area
Potomac Edison is investigating a large power outage in the Cumberland area, 1,706 customers are presently affected by the outage. Transmission and Distribution crews are out investigating the cause and expect to have power restored to most of the population before 3:30 today.

Walnut Street Assault arrest
On Thursday, February 6, 2025 at approximately 5:22 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 400 block of Walnut Street for an assault. Police arrived and contacted the alleged victim who reported that she had been assaulted by Kayden Brewington. Officers observed that the victim had sustained injuries. After further investigation, Brewington was placed under arrest and transported to Central Booking. He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and posted a $2,500 unsecured personal bond. No Salary Increase for Elected Officials
Allegany County commissioners did not make a motion to approve Code Home Rule bill 1-25 during Thursday evening's meeting. The proposed bill would see an increase to salaries for County officials. County Attorney Lee Beeman Jr… "Commissioners, without a motion to approve item A, Code Home Rule 1-25 does not pass. The salaries that are currently set in law under chapter 52- 1, 2, 3 up through 6…. those salaries that are currently in effect will remain in effect until this board takes further action."
Search effort suspended at Rocky Gap State Park
A massive search and rescue effort was underway last night at Rocky Gap State Park as a caller to 911 reported seeing an individual fall through the ice. Allegany County Emergency services supported by Cumberland Fire Department, Cumberland Police Department, Allegany County Sheriff's office, Maryland State Police and DNR search the icy lake and surrounding area for the individual for 3 hours. Maryland State Police Trooper 5 conducted an aerial search of the lake using his thermal imaging equipment and indications of broken ice. WV Lawmakers Urged to Restart SNAP Stretch
Food advocates are calling on lawmakers to help jumpstart West Virginia’s SNAP Stretch program which paused last year due to funding constraints. The program allowed SNAP participants extra money for every dollar spent toward locally grown produce at farmer’s markets statewide. Kristin McCartney with the West Virginia University Extension Program says SNAP Stretch also benefitted local economies… “This extra money is also going to fund people who are growing food in the community. Every additional dollar that can be given and used to promote those healthier choices is a benefit to those individuals."
Republicans Want To Clarify Blueprint Funding
Governor Wes Moore’s focus on education in his State of the State address included a national campaign to recruit educators to come to the state. He mentioned the Education Blueprint, but Republicans in the House took notice that there was no talk around the funding issues for it. Survey Open for Health Needs
The Allegany County Local Health Improvement Coalition has developed a survey to hear what county residents feel are the health needs of communities in the area. The coalition has developed a short online assessment where residents can answer questions anonymously that will help to improve public health in Allegany County. Those who fill out the assessment will be entered to win a $100 gift card for their efforts. The survey can be found at alleganyspeaks.com.
Moore Pressing For Education Improvement
One of the three pillars that Governor Moore featured in his State of the State speech on Tuesday was the state’s investment in its people. He focused on education and educators, saying that schools are the foundation on which everything else is built. He highlighted the state’s investment in recruiting new teachers… “Our first order priority is recruiting and retaining world class educators for every single Maryland classroom. I want our children learning by 4, I want them reading by 8, and I want them college and career ready by 16.”
