County Looking Forward to Start On Housing

Event Canceled For Fair Tonight

The 75th Mineral County Fair opens tonight in Fort Ashby, but one event has been cancelled.  The Diamond-J Rodeo Bull Riding and Barrel Racing Show will not be taking place.  Mineral County Fair Chairman Bill Bradfield said the ground is not in the condition needed for the show….     “Due to the – well as everybody knows, due to the weather the condition of the track and stuff – the rodeo people for safety concerns for the riders and the animals and stuff – it’s just too soft.” Rides and stage shows are scheduled to open at 6pm.

Death Toll Now Six in West Virginia Flooding

Officials in West Virginia say that six people are now confirmed dead with three persons missing due to weekend flooding.   The deadly flooding has centered around Wheeling in Ohio County in the northern panhandle.  Fairmont, WV also suffered flooding that impacted businesses and homes but there was no reported loss of life.

Frederick County Shooting Kills One on I-70

One man is dead, and two others were injured after a shooting on I-70 in Frederick County on Saturday evening, according to Maryland State Police.  The incident occurred at 11:55 p.m.  A preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were struck by gunfire from another vehicle while traveling east on I-70, not long after leaving an event at the Frederick Fairgrounds.

Johnstown Shooting Wounds Four

A shooting at a nightclub in Johnstown early Sunday morning resulted in four persons being wounded.  Three have been released from the hospital.  The shooter has yet to be apprehended.

Warrant Arrests

Courtney Delrico Thomas, 20 of Owings Mills and Baltimore, MD, was transported from Baltimore Central Booking and served a Circuit Court, Grand Jury Indictment for 6 counts of CDS: Possession with Intent to Distribute: Narcotics, 4 counts of CDS: Distribution Narcotics, 6 counts of CDS: Possession-Not Cannabis, and CDS Possession – Large Amount. Thomas is being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center. Nicholas Adam Gunderson, 34 formerly of Folkston, GA now identifying as homeless in Cumberland, was extradited from State Correctional Institution SCI Houtzdale in Pennsylvania and then served two (2) District Court Bench Warrants for Failure…

Bench Warrant Arrest

On Sunday, June 15th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Ben Richard Metheny, 46, of Cumberland, MD. Metheny was arrested on two active warrants, both issued by the Allegany County District Court. The first Arrest Warrant was issued as a result of an investigation for an incident that occurred on June 6th, 2025, at a residence in the 300 block of N. Centre St. During that incident, it is alleged that Metheny assaulted a male victim with a beer bottle. A second Bench Warrant was issued on June 8th, 2025. Electric Vehicle Attraction Waning

AAA’s latest survey shows that Americans are not as interested in purchasing electric vehicles as they were three years ago. Driver interest spiked in 2022 along with high gas prices, but as gas prices have lowered, AAA’s Doug Shupe says drivers have stepped away from the belief that the future is electric transportation…    “The percentage of US drivers who believe that most cars will be electric within the next ten years has significantly declined from 40% in 2022 to 23% this last year.”

Bay Health Declines Slightly

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental science released its annual report card on the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed. The report indicates an overall grade of C in the 19th yearly study. The grade is lower than last year but the overall trend has shown improvement over the past decade. Better management and restoration efforts along with improved wastewater treatment plants bode well for the bay’s future.

Truth Initiative Offers Free Programs to Quit Nicotine

E-cigarettes in Maryland are getting cheaper and bigger, delivering higher amounts of nicotine to users, according to a new study. Truth Initiative and the CDC Foundation, an anti-tobacco non-profit, revealed e-cigarette nicotine content has increased 2,000% since 2020.
