Ocean City Lifeguards Start Saturday

The Ocean City Beach Patrol will start guarding the 10 miles of beach this Saturday, May 24. The Beach Patrol is on duty every day from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.   This year marks the 150th anniversary of Ocean City, Maryland.

Westernport Students Will Finish Year at FSU

Allegany County Public Schools announced late Wednesday afternoon that students from Westernport Elementary will be on the campus of Frostburg State University to finish out the school year. Parents will be receiving transportation information soon. Students will have eight days on campus with breakfast and lunch provided in addition to fun activities and scheduled year-end field trips.  Their school year will end June 6.

Greene Street Theft and Trespassing Arrest

On Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 200 block of Greene St for the report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers contacted store employees who stated a male subject had been creating a disturbance inside the store and was refusing to leave. One Million More Travelers This Year

This year’s total number of travelers for the Memorial Day holiday is expected to increase by over one million from last year. Over 45 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home over the long weekend. Road trippers lead that number with 87% expected to drive to their destination. Liberty Street Intoxicated Public Disturbance, Trespassing Arrest

On Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department responded to a N. Liberty St apartment building for the report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers observed a male subject attempting to leave the area on foot and ordered him to stop. The male was stopped and detained after initially refusing to comply with the officer's orders. Officers then contacted the manager of the property, who advised that the intoxicated male subject had been inside the lobby of the property, yelling and causing a disturbance. Sewage Found in Local Creeks

Allegany County Health Department reports as a result of the recent flooding, raw sewage is flowing into Braddock run downstream from upper LaVale, which then flows into Wills creek and downstream to the Potomac river.  Do not drink, fish, or come into direct contact with those waters until further notice.  The affected portion of the Potomac river is specifically the waters downstream from Wills creek.  Contaminants from raw sewage can cause severe illness.

Park Pool Will Not Open For Memorial Day

Constitution Park’s pool will not be open for Memorial Day weekend. City workers discovered a rip in the pool liner during prep this past weekend.
