The warrants were issued as a result of Kirby failing to appear in court on two counts of trespassing set for January 15, 2025. Libraries Affected By Flooding
Two community libraries were involved in the flooding that hit the Georges Creek area on Tuesday. The Georges Creek Library sustained minimal damage with no materials or historical items including the Lefty Grove trophy harmed. It is a different story with the Westernport Library that experienced significant damages and loss of inventory. Early estimates place the value of the building’s collections alone at over $270,000.
In-Custody Deaths May Be Re-examined
An audit of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Maryland has resulted in an executive order from Governor Moore to look at cases involving in-custody deaths and possibly re-open those cases. More than half of cases reviewed by independent examiners disagreed with cause of death and found deficiencies in autopsy documentation. The Governor said Maryland should set the example for public safety… “We have to make sure that we continuing to make Maryland a model for public safety and transparency and equal justice under the law. And one is not more important than the other.”
Volunteers assist families in Westernport
United Way Day of Caring and Sharing will be held as planned today in Cumberland, but a number of work groups will be assisting with Westernport flood clean-up. Volunteers from First Peoples Community Federal Credit Union, Historic Highlands Association of Realtors, CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, First United Bank and M&T Bank will head south to 170 Church Street in Westernport. These individuals will assist families impacted by Tuesdays floods in the area of the greatest need, according to City Administrator, Lauren Feeman Legge. Marion Street Assault Arrest
On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Marion Street for the report of an assault. Upon arrival, Officers contacted the victim of the assault as well as locating the suspect, Samuel Goetz, nearby. An investigation was conducted, and as a result, Goetz was placed under arrest for assault. A search incident to the arrest of Goetz yielded a controlled dangerous substance and associated paraphernalia. On Thursday, May 15, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department were on patrol in the area of Henderson Avenue when they observed a vehicle traveling above the posted speed limit. Contact was made with the operator, Joshua Beckner, and the passenger, Alexis Nixon. A K9 officer responded to the scene and conducted a free air sniff of the vehicle, which resulted in a positive result. The vehicle was searched, and controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia was located. Both Beckner and Nixon were placed under arrest.
