American Red Cross Super Bowl

The American Red Cross and the National Football League are partnering for National Blood Drive month.  According to Jason Keeling, Executive Director of the Red Cross’ Allegany Highlands Chapter, those who give blood, platelets, or plasma through January 26 will be entered in a sweepstakes surrounding the Super Bowl. Local blood drive dates and locations can be found at redcrossblood.org…     “All blood donors through January 26 will be automatically entered into a sweepstakes for the chance to win an all-expense paid trip to the upcoming Super Bowl in New Orleans.”

The West Virginia Legislature held the last interim meetings of the 86th Legislature and started the 87th Legislature on Wednesday.  Due to winter storm Blair, nearly all the final interim meetings were cancelled as snow and ice blanketed the state, preventing many from traveling to the capitol. Ironically as Senate President Blair chaired his final meeting, winter storm Blair dumped snow on the capitol. Men’s Swimming Dominates at Vulcan Invitational in Two Day Sweep

The Frostburg State Men's Swim team completed a two-day victory at the Vulcan Invitational, besting Bethany and Salem (WV) across each day.   FSU couldn't have asked for a better start to the meet, as their 200 free relay teams went first through third, starting with sophomore Dylan King, junior Josh Horner, senior Mikkel LeBlanc, and graduate PJ Emrich (1:30.60) followed by sophomores Josh Stokes and Tory Reynolds, freshman Dylan Dela-Vega, and senior Sean O'Connor (1:33.10), then finishing up with juniors Nigel Webster and Alex Whitton, sophomore Isaac Cummings, and freshman Nate Schwarz (1:34.06).   Senior Nate Canapp picked up…

West Virginia to Hold Inaugural Parade

For the first time in almost 16 years, the inauguration parade is making a comeback in West Virginia as Governor-elect Patrick Morrisey is set to take office on January 13.  The parade will take place in downtown Charleston at 1:30 p.m.  The last parade took place on January 19, 2009, when former U.S. Senator Joe Manchin was inaugurated the second time.

Keyser Receives Railroad Funds

The city of Keyser will be receiving $800,000 from the federal government to address safety concerns at rail crossings.  The Federal Railroad Administration grant will specifically address two crossings at the northern end of Keyser.

City Police K-9 Team Graduates

The Cumberland City Police Department is proud to announce the graduation of K9 Handler Pfc. Andrea Gibbner and her K9 partner, Tina, from an intensive 4-week K9 training school. The team has successfully completed their certification in Drug Detection, Tracking, and Article Searching through the National Association of Professional Working Dog Trainers (NAPWAD). Throughout this four-week program, the K9 team underwent extensive training to hone their skills in vital areas of law enforcement support. Calvary Christian Parent Group Releases Statement

The Calvary Christian Academy Parent Advocacy Board has released a statement questioning church leadership and its involvement at the school.  The parents are displeased with the dismissal of a teacher and claim it resulted from a dispute with the pastor.  The advocacy group plans to release further information on the issue.

Veteran Social Studies Teacher Passes

Raymond P. Miller, 77, of Barton, died Wednesday.  Miller taught social studies at Valley and Westmar High Schools for 43 years.  He and William Martin coached the Valley mock trial team to a state title in 1991.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Frostburg with visitation 1 hour prior.

Braddock Middle In HOLD Status Briefly

From Allegany County Public Schools: Today, January 10, 2025 Braddock Middle School was placed in a brief HOLD status due to a medical emergency. First Responders arrived on scene and provided medical service. School administrators have given the “All Clear,” and the instructional day resumed as normal.
