Maryland Voted Twice for Jimmy Carter for President

Jimmy Carter, the nation's 39th president who died this week at the age of 100, took the state of Maryland twice in his bids for president.  Carter won the state in 1976 when he defeated Gerald Ford for president.  In 1980, when Carter lost in a landslide to Ronal Reagan, he still carried Maryland by three percentage points over Reagan.  Maryland was one of only six states carried by Carter in 1980.  Ironically, Carter also carried West Virginia, now a staunchly Republican state.
