Oakland Fire Destroys Home
One firefighter was injured on Sunday while crews fought a residential fire on Crellin Mine Road in Oakland. The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s office indicated the fire was discovered by a neighbor and a family dog was rescued from the house when firefighters arrived. A roof collapse sent one firefighter to Garrett Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Preliminary findings indicate the fire started in the area of the front porch. Total loss is estimated at $200,000.
North End Fire Under Investigation
A fire in Cumberland’s North End is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s office. Firefighters responded to the 1000 block of Piedmont Avenue Sunday afternoon for a residential fire. The two-story single-family residence incurred approximately $40,000 in damage. The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze that appears to have originated in a second-floor bedroom.
Ocean City Beaches Remain Closed
Medical waste continues to wash ashore on Delmarva beaches. It was first discovered Sunday. The town of Ocean City made the following announcement: Ocean City Beach Patrol, Public Works and Emergency Services have been actively monitoring the waste washing onshore. As of this (Monday) morning, the waste and medical debris on the beach is considerably less than yesterday. Out of an abundance of caution, the ocean will remain closed to swimming and surfing at this time. We appreciate the public’s cooperation and will continue to provide updates as they become available.
Warrant Arrests
Friday, September 6, 2024 Galen Lee Garrison, 48 of Eckhart Mines, was arrested as a Fugitive From Justice due to a warrant out of Mineral County WV for traffic related offenses. Garrison waived extradition and was later released to the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office. Tuesday, September 10, 2024 Jenry Rodolfo Miguel Raymundo-Brito, 22 of Alexandria, VA was arrested on a District Court Bench Warrant for Failure to Appear. Pennsylvania Also Facing Housing Shortages
While Allegany County and the state of Maryland are developing ways to come up with new housing to meet demand, the housing shortage is also prevalent in neighboring Pennsylvania. Over 60% of housing in the state was built before 1970. County Designates Official Arts Agency
Allegany County now has an official Arts Agency. The county commissioners adopted a resolution that gives the Allegany Arts Council the official designation. Since 1975, the council has served as an umbrella organization for the arts in Allegany County, recently moving to a new gallery location on Baltimore Street from Centre Street in downtown Cumberland. Julie Westendorff, Arts Council Executive Director, addressed the commissioners asking them to adopt the resolution and discussed some council programs… “In addition to our operation of a year-round professional gallery, we also develop programs that promote arts engagement and awareness, including our “young at art”…
Heritage Days Deemed Success
The 55th Annual Heritage Days Festival proved to be very successful this past weekend. Perfect weather on Saturday and Sunday saw increased crowds for the festival along Historic Washington Street. Ed Mullaney of Let’s Beautify Cumberland and the celebrity champion of Cumberland Jeopardy this year, said the festival shows off the history and culture of the city… “It lights some fires. It builds pride in the local community and it shows the outside community what we’re all about – history – but we’re having fun and looking forward to the future.”
E. Roberts Street Assault Arrest
On Sunday, September 15, 2024 at approximately 4:55 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 100 block E. Roberts Street. Police contacted the alleged victim who reported that she had been assaulted by Dexter Smith. Officers observed that the victim had sustained injuries consistent with her statement. Smith was placed under arrest and transported to Central Booking. He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and released on his personal recognizance. Bedford Street Assault Arrests
On Sunday, September 15, 2024 at approximately 4:17 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 600 block of Bedford Street in reference to an assault in progress. Police contacted the involved parties and identified them as Nikita Waller, Kaitlin Bruckner, and Chaunce Teele. Officers learned that an assault did occur between parties and that they were disturbing the peace of the neighbors. Maryland U.S. Senate Candidate Larry Hogan, Republican, has received the endorsement of now Independent Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia.
