This Christmas season, Canal Place and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad are collaborating with businesses in the City of Cumberland for a Polar Express magical holiday. Cumberland Police Department Looking For Recruits
The Cumberland Police Department is accepting applications for both entry-level police officers as well as lateral candidates with certification. Applications will be accepted for the rest of the month of September. New applicants are required to take a written test at the police department on Bedford Street. The starting salary for entry-level police officers is $50,000 annually. There are also several hiring bonus programs being offered for new and certified officers.
Casinos Have Hot Month in August
Maryland’s six casinos combined to have the ninth-best single month total since the casino program launched in 2010. In August, over $173 million in revenue was generated from slot machines and table games in the state, an increase of 7.8% over August of 2023. Tax revenue collected by the state topped $73 million and over $53 million went into the Education Trust Fund. For Rocky Gap Casino, it was another year-over-year down month, off 6.9% from a year ago. The local gamer took in just $5 million in August, the lowest of the states six casinos.
Fort Hill Graduate Nails Game Winning Field Goal
Fort Hill High School graduate Danny King drilled the game winning field goal Saturday as Southern Utah upset the University of Texas at El Paso, 27-24. King also converted a 38 yard field goal in the contest. Southern Utah is coached by DeLane Fitzgerald, former head coach at Frostburg State.
City Police Report
On Saturday, September 7th, 2024, The Cumberland City Police arrested Antonio Fagan Jr, 36, of Cumberland MD. Fagan was arrested on an outstanding Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on July 29th, 2024. The warrant alleged Fagan failed to appear in court on that date for previous charges of theft and issuing forged currency. Fagan was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond. Bench Warrant Arrest
On Friday, September 6th, 2024, The Cumberland City Police responded to the 400 block of Virginia Ave for the report of a suspicious female subject. Upon arrival, the female was identified as Victoria Ruth King, 26, Dundalk MD. It was discovered that King had an active Bench Warrant issued for her out of Pinellas County, FL. The warrant alleged that King failed to appear for trial in Florida on charges of trafficking fentanyl and grand theft. As a result, King was placed under arrest for being a fugitive of justice.
